Welcome Letter

12th January 2012

Dear Parents,

I hope you have enjoyed the Christmas and New Year celebrations and feel refreshed and rested. Before looking ahead to the Spring Term, I will reflect for a moment on some of the school events that took place in the last few weeks of the Autumn Term.

Mind Over Manor Quiz
A splendid Mind Over Manor Quiz Competition came to a dramatic climax at the end of November, with Stirling defeating Balmoral in the final. Congratulations to the victorious Stirling team – Ben Walsh, Cameron Piedra, Harry Broad, Oliver Mawdsley and Harry Broad.

"Bugsy Malone" : Year 6 Play
On 29th November the Year 6 boys gave us a tremendous production of "Bugsy Malone". Double-breasted suits and flouncy dresses were the order of the day and the boys clearly had enormous fun performing for us. It was a super team effort, but we congratulate Rory Muirhead, in particular, for his excellent portrayal of Bugsy. Many congratulations to Miss Allen for the wonderful back-drop and the director, Mr Rixham, for all his hard work with the boys. Bravo to all involved!

Music Concert
Our Christmas music concert took place on 8th December in the Theatre and there was a wonderfully diverse selection of pieces from the boys, with all age groups represented, and I know the boys loved playing to a full house! Thank you for your support and well done to all the performers.

Carol Service
The whole school attended our Carol Service at Holy Trinity Church on 14th December and it was a delightful occasion, with the Year Group choirs, the Chamber Choir, the Vocal Ensemble and all the readers performing brilliantly. Mrs Newbery, ably assisted by Mr Freer, deserves particular praise for her tremendous work in masterminding the concert and carol service.

At Final Assembly on the last day of term prizes were awarded to the following boys :

Many congratulations to all those listed above.

New Staff for 2012
We welcome this term the following new members of staff :
Mr Saddington (gap student), Mrs Mann (piano / theory teacher) and Miss Wyatt (violin teacher).

Year 8 Examinations in January
The examinations went very well at the end of November and, for the boys in Year 8 only, there are more practice CE papers to sit on Monday and Tuesday next week; the boys should already have brought home a timetable.

Spring Term Calendar
I hope your son has brought home the new Spring Term calendar and that he is excited by the many events planned for this term.

Competitions
Over the next five weeks the boys will be able to enjoy many competitions at lunchtime or after school, including Public Speaking, Baking, General Knowledge, Chess and Singing !

In this special Olympic year, I hope the boys have selected an inspiring sporting piece for the Public Speaking competition and that they have started to learn it off by heart. They will be asked to perform their piece to their classmates over the next few weeks, as the finals take place on 31st January (Years 4 – 6) and 7th February (Years 7 & 8).

Year 7 Trip to Flatford Mill
The Year 7 boys will be heading off to Flatford Mill (in Constable country) from Monday 27th February until Friday 2nd March. The boys will be able to combine their geographical explorations for their Common Entrance fieldwork with some sketching and painting during the week.

It promises to be an exciting start to the New Year! I hope the boys work hard and have a happy and successful term.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Half Term Letter

21st October 2011

Dear Parents,

The first half of term has flown by! It has been an exciting seven weeks and I am sure everyone is looking forward to a decent break, but I wish to reflect on some of the highlights from September and October and also draw your attention to some important events in the second half of term.

House Debating Competition
A splendid House Debating Competition came to an end last Friday. Close battles took place between the debating teams of all four Houses in the preliminary rounds, with the question of whether fast food is good for us under scrutiny in the first debate before we moved on to the issue of whether children's behaviour is influenced by watching violent films in the second contest. Both debates were of a very high quality.

The Grand Final had the motion "Holding the 2012 Olympics in London is a Mistake" and another thought-provoking debate ensued, with Windsor (opposing the motion) defeating Balmoral. Congratulations to the victorious Windsor team - James Maidment, James Tamlyn, Jack Maidment and Misha Belsky. Many thanks to the senior boys who helped with chairing and setting up the debates and particular thanks to Ms Lively for inspiring the boys and planning everything so thoroughly.

Year 4 Residential Trip to the Isle of Wight
The Year 4 boys had a wonderful time in the Isle of Wight at the end of September. My thanks to Miss Worthington, Miss Ferguson, Miss Wilkinson and Mr Jeans for organising everything so carefully and giving up their time to supervise the boys.

Photography Competition
It has been very pleasing to see so many entries for Miss Allen's inaugural Photography Competition and the boys' imaginative work has brightened up the corridors and stairs for the last four weeks. After half-term, Mrs Segrave will be viewing the photographs and choosing winners and runners-up for all the year groups.

Harvest Festival
It was great to see so many parents at Holy Trinity Church for our Harvest Festival. The Vocal Ensemble (and, indeed, all the choirs) sang superbly and our Head Boy did us proud. Thank you also for your generous donations for Buffy House. Particular thanks must go to Mrs Newbery who masterminded proceedings with good-humoured efficiency.

Visiting Theatre Groups
We have enjoyed two visiting theatre groups in the first half of term, with the Year 4 boys having fun dressing up for their Roman presentation and the whole school amused and engaged by our French drama performance on the theme of being shipwrecked in France.

Open Morning
Open Morning took place last Saturday and the boys proved to be great ambassadors for the school, either as musicians, sportsmen, artists, DT experts, French café waiters or acting as tour guides. Well done to all who helped out in any way. Our visitors spoke warmly of the boys' courtesy and enthusiasm for life.

Sports News
Mr Russell has arranged football fixtures for every year group in the first half of term and the boys have really enjoyed their matches and secured some fine victories. Two notable successes were the Under-11 team's excellent performances in securing 2nd place in the Northcote 5-a-side competition and this week's tremendous 2-1 victory for the 1st XI over Harrodian School, with goals from Jack Hunter-Lees and Ollie Stevenson-Smith and a Man of the Match display from Jamie Allen.

Remembrance Service - Sunday 13th November
The Remembrance Sunday service will be held at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday 13th November. The Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy will lay wreaths at roughly 10.45am at the memorial outside the church, having walked up from the Clapham Branch of the Royal British Legion. After the ceremony all present will go in to the Remembrance Day Service. I hope that many of you will be able to attend and I would like EHTM pupils to wear their school uniform for the occasion. The wreaths that we lay remember those young men who used to be taught in this very building, when it was known as Manor House School. There is a Memorial Plaque on the North external wall of the Church which lists the Old Manorians who fell during the Great War.

School Examinations - Monday 14th November
The school examinations take place in the week beginning 14th November. Revision advice sheets for boys in Year 7 and 8 have been distributed and you should all have received an examination timetable. I do not recommend that the boys in Years 7 and 8 devote the whole of half-term to work matters! A balance needs to be struck between relaxing and revising and, as I am sure you are aware, the boys will be able to revise most effectively if they concentrate for short periods of time. Much will depend on the personality of your son, but please ensure that the boys have plenty of opportunities for fun next week.

Boys in Years 4, 5 and 6 should not spend their half-term worrying about school examinations. We will focus on revision and examination technique after half-term.

No School - Friday 18th November
As you may have noticed from the calendar, there will be no school on Friday 18th November. This will provide the boys with a welcome break after their exertions during Exam Week and school will be open as normal on Monday 21st November.

Year 6 Play - Tuesday 29th November
Please come along to support the Year 6 boys when they present "Bugsy Malone" on Tuesday 29th November at 6.00 pm in the Theatre.

Parents' Evenings in November / December
Parents’ Evenings will be held in November and December and I encourage you to make a note in your diaries of the following dates:
Wednesday 23rd November : Years 4 & 6
Thursday 1st December : Years 5 & 7
Monday 5th December : Year 8

Best wishes for a restful half-term holiday and I look forward to seeing you again bright and early on Monday 31st October.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Welcome Letter

8th September 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A warm welcome back to the new academic year at Eaton House The Manor. I do hope that the summer holiday was enjoyable for you all and that the boys are looking forward to the new term.

While the school was closed over the summer the maintenance team has been as busy as ever, redecorating classrooms, installing new computers in the ICT Room and new Interactive Whiteboards in the science laboratories, DT Room and Latin room. All these new additions should enhance the learning environment for the boys.

I am very pleased to be able to welcome some new staff into the fold. We have two new teachers in the junior part of the school: Miss Ferguson is 4KF’s class teacher and Miss Lowe is in charge of 5JL. Mr Sprott becomes Head of Latin and our Gap Student for the term will be Mr Yates, an old boy of Marlborough College. We also welcome back Mrs Williams as Head of Geography after her maternity leave. You will notice that we have abandoned the old-style nomenclature for our classes; they are no longer called A or Alpha and have been named after the form tutor’s initials.

As usual at the beginning of the year the boys have been issued with school calendars and homework diaries. Please check through the relevant dates on the school calendar. Each pupil has been given two calendars, so that one can be kept at home for your benefit, while the other can be left here at school. Please check the homework diaries each evening for any notes from staff and also to understand what work has been set. Please remember that the diaries need to be initialled every evening.

On the calendars you will note that we have welcome evenings for parents and guardians coming up very soon. You are invited to come to the Library for a glass of wine at 5.30 pm, a short talk from me at 5.45 pm followed by an opportunity to meet your son’s new class teacher in the classroom. You will be free to leave at 6.30 pm and I do hope you will be able to attend. I highlight the dates below:

Monday 12th September : Year 5
Wednesday 14th September : Year 4 (meet in the Theatre, not the Library)
Monday 19th September : Year 8
Wednesday 21st September : Year 6
Thursday 22nd September : Year 7

I look forward to seeing you all very soon and wish the boys a very happy and successful year.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Headmaster's Letter

21st July 2011

Dear Parents,

It has been another fantastically busy term and I am sure the boys are already enjoying their summer break.

Orangutans!
At the start of term we heard a fascinating talk about the work of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation which rescues and cares for orangutans in the Borneo jungle and the boys were keen to raise funds for it. As a result of their donations, we have sponsored a beautiful orangutan called Nita who is just a little mischievous and has been given the nickname Naughty Nita!

Quiz Night
A very successful Quiz Night was held in the theatre in May. Mr Jeans was a wonderful Master of Ceremonies and he had devised some extremely challenging questions for us. It was all great fun and I am particularly grateful to the organising committee, led by Mrs Schmeltzer and Mr Lottering, who worked extremely hard and prepared everything so beautifully.

Thanks to parental generosity, over £8,400 was raised for Facing the World, the charity which helps children with facial disfigurements, and we wish Bertie Portal and James Cash the very best of luck as they prepare for their Atlantic Rowing Challenge in December.

U.K. Junior Mathematical Challenge
The boys in Years 7 and 8 (and one boy from Year 6) took part in this national mathematical competition in the first week of May. Of the 45 boys who sat the papers, an impressive number (26) achieved marks which qualify for gold, silver and bronze certificates. 2 boys reached the gold standard, with 13 qualifying for silver and 11 for bronze awards. Certificates were presented to the boys in Final Assembly. Special congratulations go to Charles Fox who scored the highest mark of the EHTM candidates, followed by Hugh Spaughton (from Year 7) who also reached the gold standard.

Summer Concert
A delightful summer concert at the end of June was the musical highlight of the term, with dozens of performers of all ages and abilities entertaining an appreciative audience. James Tamlyn's 'cello performance of "Sicilienne" was simply stunning and there was a wonderful finale with approximately fifty boys on stage singing "Life on Mars", being accompanied by a very professional House Band featuring Mr Chris Cobbson who leaves us after many years of loyal service to the school as our peripatetic guitar teacher. Thanks, as ever, go to Mrs Newbery, Mr Freer and all the music staff for their splendid work this year.

Sports News
We had almost perfect weather for our annual Sports Day at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park; it was certainly not too hot and we were lucky to avoid the rain. There was plenty of honest endeavour on the track and field from all our competitors and some school records tumbled. I offer particular congratulations to Charles Fox, the Senior Victor Ludorum, and Jasper Johnston, our Junior Victor Ludorum, and thank Mr Russell for organising the day so efficiently.

I am very pleased to report that runners-up positions were achieved by both our senior cricketers at the Oval in the EHTM Sixes Tournament and our under-11 tennis players in the Lancing College Tournament in June. We must also congratulate Boris Ivanyuzhenkov on reaching the final of the under-11 section of the unofficial Junior World Tennis Championships in June.

Poetry Competition
An excellent Poetry Competition was organised by Ms Lively this term and I congratulate the following boys on winning their different sections, either by reciting famous poems or their own work :

Year 4:   Kit Bellman
Year 5:   Rory Muirhead
Year 6:   Oliver Vincent & Oliver Mawdsley
Year 7:   Milo Osborne-Young, James Maidment & James Tamlyn
Year 8:   Karam Treohan

The finals of the competition coincided with the news that Oliver Vincent had won the under-11 section in the national Satips Poetry competition - a fantastic achievement.

Year 8 Leavers
At the Year Eight Leavers' Party I paid tribute to the excellent contributions the boys have made in every area of school life. It is a very fine year group and we hope that they will all be happy and successful in their new schools. The boys provided some wonderful entertainment for staff and parents during the evening and it was a most enjoyable occasion.

Year 8 Smoothies!
We have made another donation (of over £250) to Ms Knowles' favourite charity, Uganda Hands for Hope, as a result of the Year 8 boys' efforts in making and selling fruit smoothies in the last week of term.

Staff Farewells
(a) Ms Kate Bailey
Ms Bailey has only been with us for a year, but she has done a fantastic job in combining two very important roles. Not only has she been an inspirational class teacher to the Year 5 boys, but she has taught Religious Studies with huge success to all the senior boys in the school. Ms Bailey has worked incredibly hard for Eaton House the Manor and we thank her for all that she has done this year, but we must also congratulate her on her well-deserved appointment as Head of Seniors at Wetherby Prep School and wish her every happiness in her new school.

(b) Ms Olive Edmunds
Ms Edmunds has been the other half of the excellent Year 5 team this year, working closely alongside Ms Bailey and giving the boys every encouragement and support throughout the year. Although we are very sad to be "losing" her, the good news is that she will not be far away as she has been appointed Senior Mistress in our Girls' School. We congratulate her on her appointment and wish her the very best of luck in her new role.

(c) Mr Richard Lawrence
Mr Lawrence retired from full-time teaching last week, having taught for over 30 years in a wide range of schools. He has been a hugely successful and much-loved Head of Classics at Eaton House the Manor since 1999 and he will be remembered by his pupils for his affection for all things classical, all things Stirling and all things cricket-related. The boys have benefitted hugely from his wisdom and experience and it was fitting that Mr Lawrence should choose to quote from some of the great classical philosophers in the presence of Year 8 Leavers, parents and colleagues in his farewell address.

Mr Lawrence was even able to show the boys at Final Assembly how to play a forward defensive shot with the brand new cricket bat presented to him by appreciative Year 7 boys. We thank him warmly for all that he has done for the school, as he leaves us to enjoy semi-retirement, and we wish him every happiness in his new ventures.

New Class Names for September
In September the boys will discover that we have moved away from the old system of naming classes A and Alpha to a new system of naming classes after the initials of the class teacher or form tutor.

New Staff for September
Mr Angus Sprott becomes Head of Latin.
Miss Kirstie Ferguson becomes 4KF’s class teacher.
Miss Jessica Lowe becomes 5JL’s class teacher.
Mr Robbie Yates will be our Gap Student for the Autumn Term.

Internal Staff Changes for September
Miss Amy Worthington becomes Year 4 Co-Ordinator.
Miss Naomi Mann becomes Year 5 Co-Ordinator.

Parent Meetings in September
Please make a note of the dates of the September meetings for parents when I will say a few words about the year ahead at 5.45pm and you will have an opportunity to meet your son’s new form teacher over a glass of wine:

Monday 12th :   Year 5
Wednesday 14th :   Year 4
Monday 19th :   Year 8
Wednesday 21st :   Year 6
Thursday 22nd :   Year 7

Summer Photography Competition
I hope you have all received a letter from Miss Allen about our new photography competition and that the boys will snap away during the summer holiday. I look forward to seeing their photographs in September.

Prize Winners : July 2011
All the prize winners who received their awards from Mr Lawrence at Final Assembly are listed below. Congratulations to all those who won prizes, commiserations to those who just missed out this time, but well done to all the boys on their hard work this year.

On a Personal Note ...
It has been an incredibly exciting first year for me, but I would like to thank all the pupils, parents and colleagues who have welcomed me so warmly. I hope you all have a wonderful summer holiday and I look forward to seeing you again on Thursday 8th September.

Best wishes,
Jeremy Edwards

Headmaster's Letter

13th May 2011

Dear Parents,

I am writing with news of some staff changes for September.

I start by congratulating Ms Olive Edmunds on her appointment as Senior Mistress in our Girls' School for September and Ms Kate Bailey on her appointment as Head of Seniors at Wetherby Prep School. Although it will be sad to have to say farewell to two splendid colleagues in July, these promotions are well-deserved and are to be celebrated.

I am afraid we will also have to say goodbye to Mr Richard Lawrence in July because, after twelve years on the staff of EHTM, he will be retiring from teaching this summer and seeking new challenges outside the classroom. We offer sincere thanks to Mr Lawrence for all the excellent work he has done here and wish him every happiness in all his future ventures. I hope to arrange an occasion before the end of term to thank Mr Lawrence properly for his magnificent contribution to Eaton House life, and the Classics department in particular, over such a long period of time.

However, I am delighted to announce that we have appointed three excellent new members of staff for September:

Miss Kirstie Ferguson joins us a Year 4 class teacher. Miss Ferguson has just completed her PGCE at Goldsmiths College, London. She graduated from Edinburgh University with joint honours in History of Art and English and also studied for her Certificat de Langue Francaise at the Sorbonne. She will work closely next year with Miss Amy Worthington who takes on the role of Year 4 Co-Ordinator.

Miss Jessica Lowe joins us as a Year 5 class teacher. Miss Lowe studied Psychology at York University, completed her PGCE at Manchester University and has been class teacher to Year 3 and Year 6 pupils at All Souls Primary School for the last three years. She will work closely with Miss Naomi Mann who will teach 5A (currently 4A) next year and takes on the role of Year 5 Co-Ordinator.

Mr Angus Sprott joins us as Head of Latin. Mr Sprott spent fifteen years in the City before deciding to re-train as a teacher. He originally studied Business at Edinburgh University, has an MA in Medieval History from Royal Holloway College, London and, more recently, has completed further studies in Latin with the Open University and his PGCE from the University of Cape Town. He is also a keen rugby player and will help with Games.

In September we will be welcoming back Mrs Laura Williams, Head of Geography, after her maternity leave. I am delighted to announce that Mr Alex Waring, who has covered for Mrs Williams so efficiently over the last two terms, will remain on the staff as Head of Religious Studies.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Welcome Letter

28th April 2011

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a restful break and that the boys are looking forward to the new term. Much went on at school in the second half of the Spring Term and I share with you some of the boys’ splendid achievements from the month of March.

13+ London Day School Entrance Examinations
Five Year 8 boys sat entrance examinations to a number of London day schools last term and I am delighted to report that they all worked extremely hard, performed superbly in the examinations and have won places to either Dulwich College or Alleyn’s School. Many congratulations to the following boys:

Joshua Stanley :   Dulwich
Ed Tillson :   Dulwich (also awarded an art scholarship by Emanuel School)
Guy Tillson :   Dulwich
Karam Treohan :   Alleyn's
William Wakefield :   Dulwich

Year 4 Play : "You Can Call Me Kate"
With Royal Wedding excitement reaching fever pitch this week, it was appropriate that Mr Rixham should choose to adapt the story of Cinderella for the Year 4 play at the end of term. "You Can Call Me Kate" was an absolute triumph, with excellent performances from all the young actors. The boys had worked hard on learning their lines during the term and they clearly gained enormous pleasure from putting it all together on stage. Although it was a stunning team effort, I must single out some of the leading figures for particular praise – Max Bonnefous as Prince William, Joe Downing as Catherine Middle Town, Theo Chevis as Buttons and the Ugly Sisters (Edward Smellie, Henry Darrell-Brown and Jack Behan-Woodall) were all fantastic. The packed audience was royally entertained.

Miss Worthington and Miss Mann were a huge support to Mr Rixham as Assistant Directors and Miss Allen offered invaluable help with the props and backdrop. To Mr Rixham we say “Bravo!” and offer huge congratulations on a wonderfully pacy, witty production.

Young Art Competition
Once again the boys have worked hard on their entries for the annual Young Art competition organised by the Royal College of Art. Young Art was started 21 years ago and is now the largest annual exhibition of its kind in London where young artists have the opportunity to exhibit their work at one of the UK’s most prestigious venues.

The following five boys are to be congratulated on having their work selected to be exhibited at the Royal College in May :
Zakariya Gaunt (5Alpha), Kulraj Soor (5A), Nikita Gurbatov (6A), Jon Virtosu (6Alpha) and Harry Meek (8A).

Final Assembly
At Final Assembly prizes were awarded to the following boys :

>
Form Prize   Form   Effort Prize
Cameron Piedra   4A   Christopher Sloan
Maxence Bonnefous   4Alpha   Joe Downing
Kulraj Soor   5A   Charlie Sutton
Benedict Griffin   5Alpha   Archie Gosling
Oliver Mawdsley   6A   Nicolas Gardner
Sam Cederwell   6Alpha   Geordie Wass
James Maidment   7A   David Heriot
Joseph Pryor   7Alpha   Jamie Allen
Maximilian Himpe   8A   Elliott Wallis
Ed Tillson   8Alpha   Karam Treohan

The following cups were awarded to pupils who made a positive contribution in all areas of school life last term:

Year 4 Industry Cup :   Pedro Azagra
Year 5 Quaich :   Charlie Warburton
Year 6 Discipilo Egregio :   Myles Russell
Year 7 Greenwood Cup :   Milo Osborne-Young
Year 8 Headmaster’s Cup :   Sam Pennington

Public Speaking Cup :   William Holy-Hasted
General Knowledge Cup :   Jack Harcourt
Year 4 Drama Cup :   Edward Smellie
Good Show Cup :   Alexander Spencer

Art Colours : Ed Tillson, Guy Tillson, William Wakefield, Hughie Gardiner- Hill, Maximilian Himpe, Harry Meek and Eddie Schmeltzer.

House Cup (for most House Points) : Windsor

Many congratulations to all those listed above.

House Music Competition
The House Singing competition took place just before half-term and Balmoral excelled with their performance of that Sixties’ classic, “Do The Locomotion” by Little Eva. There was much shaking of hips and clear, strong singing from the Balmoral choir and they were deserved winners.

The points from the House Choir section were carried forward to the second part of the House Music Competition which saw House Ensembles as well as individual performers providing a fantastically varied repertoire for the appreciative audience.

The winners of the different sections were as follows :

Solo piano :   Anthony Bennett - Windsor
Solo voice :   Edward Smellie - Stirling
Solo Instrument :   Joseph Pryor (trumpet) - Windsor
Ensemble :   Stirling
Overall winner :   Windsor

Well done to Windsor and many congratulations to all boys from all four Houses who took part in the Music Competition. Particular thanks must go to Mrs Newbery and Mr Freer who worked so hard to make everything happen!

Spring Concert
We also enjoyed a terrific Spring Concert at St Barnabas Church at the beginning of March with a fantastic selection of choral music, traditional and modern. As well as being a lovely occasion, it was also an opportunity to present some of the Year 8 stalwarts with tokens of our appreciation for all that they have given to the musical life of the school over the last five years : Sam Pennington, Xander Hepher, Mungo Fenwick, Elliott Wallis, Harry Meek, Karam Treohan, Maximilian Himpe and Jack Harcourt.

General Knowledge Quiz Competition
Our junior and senior teams acquitted themselves very well in the national Satips General Knowledge Quiz last term. Congratulations to the five scoring members of both teams:

Senior Team      Junior Team
Jack Harcourt (top scorer)      Rory Muirhead (top scorer)
Charlie Broad      Gaspard Baroudel
Alexander Spencer      Oliver Gordon-Brown
Harry Tyler      Misha Belsky
James Maidment      Anthony Bennett

Sports Round-Up
Mr Russell writes,
"The Spring Term started with cold, frosty pitches, moved to wet muddy venues before eventually turning to warmer, drier conditions. During this time the boys experienced some excellent triumphs, some near misses and one or two defeats. The main sport has been Rugby although all ages have had some Hockey fixtures, not to mention the annual school Cross-Country events, House Rugby and Basketball and finally the all-important end-of-term Staff v Year 8 Leavers Basketball match!

The rugby teams developed and improved as the term progressed with the U9s and U10A teams only losing one game all term. The U11s had a mixed set of results, but the highlight was a convincing win over St Philip’s from Barnes. The 1st XV and 2nd Team produced some outstanding rugby at times, both at 7s and the full game. The 1st XV’s most impressive display came against Thomas’s (Clapham) - a convincing 50-0 win! The 2nd Team left it to the very end of the season to record their best victory - a 50-35 victory over Ibstock Place.

We also played a number of Hockey fixtures, mostly against Newton Prep, where Hockey is their main sport. All ages acquitted themselves very well demonstrating the depth of talent the boys have across a range of sports at EHTM. The U10s had the greatest success, winning three of their four matches. The U9s recorded their best results against Oliver House, winning and drawing these games.

The Cross-Country was split into two races this year; a senior race for Years 6, 7 and 8 over 3500 metres and a junior race for Years 4 and 5 over 2400 metres. The weather was perfect for both, the support from parents made for an excellent atmosphere on both days and all the boys who participated performed very well, with many of them recording personal bests. Oliver Fox (6A) won the senior event with an outstanding time of 14 minutes 46 seconds (20 seconds off the school record) and Gaspard Baroudel (5A) won the junior event with an equally impressive time of 10 minutes 47 seconds.

Each term ends with a Leavers v. Staff sporting match and the Spring Term challenge comes in the form of Basketball. As ever, the Leavers raise their game and put the staff under a lot of pressure and the boys duly took an early lead. However, as the match progressed the experience of the staff eventually told and despite some spirited play by the boys, the staff came out on top 29-13.

The House matches produced some fantastically competitive displays at all ages in both Rugby and Basketball. The eventual winners were:
Rugby : Year 4 - Windsor, Year 5 - Arundel, Year 6 - Stirling, Years 7 & 8 – Balmoral
Basketball : .Juniors - Windsor, Seniors – Windsor

Well done to all the boys who participated this term whether in team sport, House sport or cross-country.

Sports Colours

At Final Assembly the following boys received prizes for their sporting endeavours :

Colts Colours : Jasper Johnston, Kulraj Soor, Louis Vaughan, Zakariya Gaunt, Rafferty Dale, Lewis Gaysford, Archie Gosling, Joe Morrison, Gaspard Baroudel, Max de la Guerra and Eddie King.

Half Colours : James Sloan, James Tamlyn, Nicholas Hamber, Milo Osborne-Young and Oles Morris.

Full Colours : Elliott Wallis, Guy Tillson, Ed Tillson, Harry Tyler, Hughie Gardiner-Hill, Charlie Pizey, Boris Belsky, Xander Hepher, Jack Johnston, Mungo Fenwick, Harry Meek, William Holy-Hasted, Charlie Gosling, James Brocklebank-Fowler and Sam Pennington.

Rugby Excellence Cup : Elliott Wallis

House Chess
The semi-finals of the House Chess competition took place in March and, fairly predictably, the two finalists were Nikita Gurbatov from Year 6 and Jack Johnston from Year 8. In spite of brave work from Jack, Nikita's expertise was decisive and he retained his title to notch up his third consecutive victory. Many congratulations to Nikita.

Year 8 "Mock" Examinations
Good luck to the boys in Year 8 who are sitting their Common Entrance mock examinations next week.

Residential Trips
Two residential trips have been arranged for this term, with the Year 5 boys heading off to Osmington Bay from Monday 1st May until Friday 6th May.

The Year 8 boys will be heading off to Wales from Monday 20th June until Friday 24th June to celebrate the end of their Common Entrance examinations.

Quiz Night : Friday 20th May
Our charity Quiz Night takes place in the theatre at 7.00 pm on 20th May. All money raised will go towards the charity, Facing the World. If you would like to attend, please get in touch with Jane Doxford, my PA, next week. It promises to be an enjoyable evening.

Sports Day : Wednesday 6th July
I would also like to highlight the date of Sports Day at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park. It is a morning event this year and events get underway at 10.00 am. All parents and family members are warmly invited to attend.

More Staff Babies!
I am sure parents and boys will be keen to congratulate Mr Lottering and his wife on the birth of their first child – a boy named LJ – over the Easter break.

I hope your son has brought home the new Summer Term calendar and that he has a happy, successful term. Let us also hope for more of that April sunshine!

Best wishes,

Jeremy Edwards

Headmaster's Letter

18th February 2011

It has been an action-packed start to the year and the boys have been involved in a wide range of activities over the last five weeks.

Visiting Speakers
We heard a fascinating talk from Robert Portal and James Cash in assembly at the beginning of term. The two men are planning to row across the Atlantic in December in support of the charity, Facing the World, which supports children who suffer from facial disfigurements. The talk included lots of information about the physical and logistical challenges of rowing across a huge ocean, as well as moving footage of the life-changing medical treatment that is offered to the disfigured children.

We will be supporting Facing the World in various ways next term, including a parent-staff Quiz Night that will take place on Friday 27th May, so please put this date in your diaries. We will also follow the preparations of Robert and James in the build-up to the Atlantic Race.

Readathon
Through your tremendous support for the Readathon we have raised over £4,000 for Trinity Hospice and Miss Leah Bull came into assembly at the end of January to receive a large cheque from the Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy. Miss Bull explained to the boys how Trinity Hospice supports terminally ill patients and she thanked them for their excellent work in not only raising such a significant sum of money, but in reading such an exciting range of books over the Christmas holidays. Mr Lawrence organised everything superbly and we would like to thank all parents who gave such strong support for the event.

The following boys were presented with certificates for their efforts :

Best fund-raisers:   Jack Behan-Woodall (4Alpha)
Zayan Dhanani (6A)

Most imaginative readers:  Harry Buchan (4Alpha)
Alexander Tsang (4Alpha)
Max Bonnefous (4Alpha)
Henry Schmeltzer (5A)
Zayan Dhanani (6A)
Geordie Wass (6Alpha)
Casper Woods (7A)
Josh Stanley (8Alpha)

Satips General Knowledge Quiz
As preparation for the Satips Prep Schools’ General Knowledge Quiz competition, we had the whole school sitting an old Satips quiz paper in the middle of January. The top ten performers in Years 4, 5 and 6 were invited to make up the Junior Team and the top performers in Years 7 and 8 were invited to join the Senior Team. The two teams sat the real papers on 3rd February and we should hear how the boys got on at the end of term. Certificates were awarded in assembly today to the boys who scored the most correct answers in their year group in the trial run :

Year 4:  Oliver Gordon-Brown (52%)
Year 5:  Rory Muirhead (54%)
Year 6:  Oliver Vincent (57%)
Year 7:  Charlie Broad (79%)
Year 8:  Jack Harcourt (87%)

Public Speaking Competition
I was entertained and moved by the range and sensitivity of the boys’ performances in the two finals of the Public Speaking Competition. Every boy had been asked to learn an inspiring speech and the finalists rose to the occasion brilliantly. The winner of the Year 8 section, William Holy-Hasted, gave a thrilling rendition of JFK’s “moon speech”, but there were many strong performances to savour. The following were selected as winners of their respective year groups :

Year 4:  Jack Behan-Woodall
Year 5:  Jack Maidment
Year 6:  Myles Russell
Year 7:  Hugh Spaughton
Year 8:  William Holy-Hasted

We offer congratulations to the winners, of course, and every boy who spent hours choosing a suitable piece and preparing for his performance. The boys have been given tremendous support from colleagues and parents and I particularly wish to thank Miss Lively for co-ordinating everything so efficiently.

House Chess
The House Chess competition is reaching a crucial stage and the semi-finals and finals will take place in March, but we already know the year group winners :

Year 4:  Oliver Gordon-Brown
Year 5:  Freddie Hamilton
Year 6:  Nikita Gurbatov
Year 7:  Aage Voigt-Noble
Year 8:  Jack Johnston

Well done to all the boys listed above. Nikita Gurbatov is the reigning school champion and we shall see whether he can retain his title after half-term.

House Music Competition
The House Singing competition takes place this afternoon and I will be able to report after half-term about which Houses excelled in their renditions of “My Way” and other Sixties’ classics! The House Singing is just part of the wider House Music Competition and we shall hear individual singers, pianists and bands in the second part of the competition on Tuesday 29th March.

Sports Successes
Mr Russell will report more fully to you with his end-of-term round-up of our sporting endeavours during the term, but I will briefly highlight the performances of some of our teams. The under-9 “A” rugby team beat Hornsby House 9-1 this week and remains undefeated. The under-10 hockey players won three of their four games against Newton Prep this week and, not to be outdone, our under-11 rugby team beat St Philip’s 31-0 on Wednesday.

Our senior rugby players have been very competitive against some strong opposition this term and two strong performances came in the games against Northcote Lodge when the 1st XV lost narrowly 5-12 and the 2nd team won 40-10.

Cross-Country Races
All boys in Years 6, 7 and 8 will compete in the school cross-country race on Wednesday 9th March at 2.30 pm. Please note that the boys in Years 4 and 5 will have a separate race over a slightly shorter course on Tuesday 29th March at 2.30 pm.

World Book Day : Thursday 3rd March
After half-term we will be celebrating World Book Day and I hope you and your sons will come to school dressed up as a character from a favourite book. I am still scratching my head over what to wear!

Year 5 Parents : Senior School Options
Over the last few weeks I have met with some Year 5 parents to talk about possible senior schools for the boys. If you have not already met with me this term to discuss senior school options, please make an appointment through Jane Doxford to see me after half-term.

Staff News : Mrs Williams
I am sure you will be delighted to learn that Mrs Williams gave birth to a little girl a few weeks ago. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Williams and a warm welcome to baby Abigail.

Residential Trips
The Year 7 boys are heading off to Flatford Mill after half-term (Monday 28th February – Friday 4th March) with Mr Waring, Miss Allen and Miss Knowles and I am sure they will gain a great deal from the trip as well as having the opportunity to complete their research for their Common Entrance geography coursework.

The Year 6 boys are heading off to Normandy later in the term (Sunday 13th March – Saturday 19th March) with Mme Lena, Mr Rixham and Ms Wilkinson and I am sure they will relish the opportunity to practise speaking French and enjoy the trips arranged for them.

I look forward to seeing you again at 8.30 am on Monday 28th February. Whether you are on the slopes, on the beach or staying at home, I wish you all an enjoyable half-term break.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Welcome Letter

14th January 2011

Dear Parents,

I hope you have enjoyed the Christmas and New Year celebrations and feel refreshed and rested. Before looking ahead to the Spring Term, I will reflect for a moment on some of the school events that took place in the last few weeks of the Autumn Term.

Music News
Our Christmas music concert took place on 8th December in the Theatre and there was a wonderfully diverse selection of pieces from the boys, with all age groups represented, and I know the performers loved playing to a full house! Thank you for your support.

On 14th December the Vocal Ensemble proved to be fine ambassadors for the school when they sang at a splendid Carol Concert at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital. The boys had warmed up (!) for this event by singing carols around Clapham Old Town in freezing temperatures on 7th December, with all proceeds going to Trinity Hospice.

The whole school attended our own Carol Service at Holy Trinity Church on 15th December and it was a delightful occasion, with the Year Group choirs, the Chamber Choir, the Vocal Ensemble and all the readers performing brilliantly.

Mrs Newbery, ably assisted by Mr Freer, deserves particular praise for her tremendous work in organising all these wonderful musical events. Bravo to Mrs Newbery and all the boys!

We welcome this term the following new members of staff :
Ms Wilkinson – head of DT
Mr Waring – geography and games
Miss Box - learning enrichment
Mrs Wilkins – learning enrichment
Mr Swana – piano
Mr Davison – gap student

Year 8 Examinations
The examinations went very well at the end of November and, for the boys in Year 8 only, there are more practice CE papers to sit next week; the boys should have brought home a timetable yesterday. On Wednesday the boys will have normal lessons for the first part of the day and will be taken out of class for a short time to have their "mock" French orals.

Readathon
I hope the boys enjoyed reading lots of books over the holiday for the Readathon. I was delighted to see that many boys have already returned their Readathon forms, but if your son has not yet collected his sponsor money, please encourage him to do so over the weekend. Over £1400 has been received already (in one day!) and all the money raised will go to Trinity Hospice.

Spring Term Calendar
I hope your son has brought home the new Spring Term calendar and that he is excited by the many events planned for this term.

Residential Trips
Two residential trips have been arranged for this term, with the Year 7 boys heading off to Flatford Mill (in Constable country) from Monday 28th February until Friday 4th March. The boys will be able to combine their geographical explorations for their Common Entrance fieldwork with some sketching and painting during the week.

The Year 6 boys will be heading off to France from Sunday 13th March until Saturday 19th March and I am sure they will be able to practise speaking French for much of the week, as well as having lots of exciting visits.

There will be no additional charge for these trips, as all the costs of our residential visits are included in the school fees.

Competitions
Over the next five weeks the boys will be able to enjoy the Public Speaking, House Chess and House Singing competitions. I hope the boys have selected an inspiring piece for the Public Speaking competition and that they have started to learn it off by heart. They will be asked to perform their piece to their classmates in a few weeks’ time, as the finals take place on 1st February (Years 4 – 6) and 8th February (Years 7 & 8).

This term we will also be entering two teams in the national Satips General Knowledge Quiz competition for prep schools for the first time. All boys will sit a practice quiz next Thursday (20th January) to decide which general knowledge experts will represent the school on 3rd February. Ten juniors (Years 4 – 6) and ten seniors (Years 7 & 8) will make up the teams.

It promises to be an exciting start to the New Year! I hope the boys work hard and have a happy and successful term.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Headmaster's Letter

6th December 2010

Dear Parents,

Cold Weather
I do apologise for the inconvenience of school having to close last Thursday. Although most pupils would have been able to make it into school, a number of staff were having significant problems with their journeys (trains cancelled, cars snowed in etc.) and the decision was taken early in the morning to send you a text message explaining that school would be closed for the day.

Over the winter months we will always endeavour to keep the school open, on the understanding that there will be enough staff available to look after the classes and, most importantly, that the children can get to and from school safely.

Text messages will be sent to all parents before 7.00 am, if the school has to close, so please ensure that we have the most up-to-date mobile phone details for you. You may also check the front page of our website for updates.

Parents' Evening for Removes (Year 5) and Lower Sixth (Year 7) : Monday 6th December
Last Thursday’s Parents’ Evening has been re-scheduled for tonight. We hope that this is convenient for you.

Carol Singing : Tuesday 7th December
The Vocal Ensemble will be singing carols around Clapham Old Town after school on Tuesday 7th December and ending up at the front of Sainsbury’s, ready for collection by parents at 6.30pm. Feel free to join us at Sainsbury’s at around 6.10pm and add your own fine voices to those of the boys.

Music Concert : Wednesday 8th December
Our Christmas music concert takes place on Wednesday 8th December at 6.00pm in the Theatre. The performers will stay at school at 4.00 pm to rehearse and we will provide a packed tea for them. We would love to see all family and friends of the performers at the concert, but all parents and pupils are most welcome to attend.

Carol Service : Wednesday 15th December
The whole school will attend the Carol Service which takes place at Holy Trinity Church on Wednesday 15th December and all parents, family and friends are warmly invited. The service begins at 5.30 pm and I do hope you will be able to join us. If not, please collect your sons from Holy Trinity Church at approximately 6.30 pm.

Christmas Cards
There is now a Christmas card post box in the entrance hall and the boys may send each other (and staff) Christmas cards. We have enlisted some of Santa’s Elves to help us deliver cards each day and they have asked me to mention that all cards should have the first name and surname on the envelope, as well as the name of the class.

Last Day of Term : Thursday 16th December
Just a reminder that the Autumn Term ends at 12.00 midday on Thursday 16th December. Please arrange to collect your sons at this time.

Staff Appointments for January
As you are aware, Mrs Laura Williams goes on maternity leave after Christmas and we wish her well for the big event. Our new geography teacher for January is Mr Alex Waring, a graduate of King’s College, London who has taught geography in a range of different schools both in the UK and abroad. He has recently completed an MA in international relations and has been working closely with Mrs Williams this week to ensure a smooth transition in January.

Mr Richard Holt will be leaving us at the end of this term to take up a new position at Dulwich College Preparatory School. He has been on the staff at Eaton House the Manor since 2006 and we thank him for all that he has done in the Design and Technology department during his time here and wish him every happiness in his new post. His successor will be Ms Janet Wilkinson, a talented designer in her own right who has taught extensively in the UK and, most recently, in Germany.

Mrs Dea Goode teaches one day a week in the Learning Enrichment department and she will be leaving at Christmas to take up a full-time position at Wimbledon High School. We thank her for all her excellent work here. In January we welcome Mrs Rebecca Box to the Learning Enrichment department and she will be splitting her time between the Prep School and the Girls’ School.

Our gap student (and old boy), Alex Lindsay, will be leaving us at Christmas to go travelling. We thank him for all his hard work this term and wish him Bon Voyage and all the best of luck at university next October. Our new gap student for January will be Alex Davison, an old boy of the Lycee, who is currently helping out in the pre-prep.

I look forward to seeing you at the end-of-term festivities.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Welcome Letter

9th September 2010

Dear Parents,

A warm welcome back to the new academic year at Eaton House The Manor. I do hope that the summer holiday was enjoyable for you all and that the boys are looking forward to the new term.

It gives me great pleasure to write my first letter to you, as Headmaster, and I am very excited about being a "new boy" again. I have been given excellent support from Sebastian Hepher over the last two terms; I could not have wished for a more generous hand-over and I am sure we all wish him well in his new post at Eaton Square School.

I have also been guided superbly by Peter Rixham, Deputy Headmaster, over the last few weeks and I now feel completely at home in my new surroundings. I am looking forward to getting to know the boys as quickly as I can and will be observing every class at some point next week. To help me get to know the boys well, I intend to teach the boys some PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) at various times during the year. Although I spoke with many of you at my welcome drinks party earlier in the year, I am keen to meet you again at the up-coming Information Evenings, sporting fixtures, concerts and plays. Feel free to come up and introduce yourself.

While the school was closed over the summer the maintenance team has been as busy as ever, redecorating and assisting with the installation of new lockers, more Interactive Whiteboards in the classrooms and our Information Screen in the entrance hall. We hope that the Information Screen will be helpful in relaying messages to pupils and parents when unexpected events occur (fixtures cancelled or school trips delayed), but we can also send out reminders to the boys during the day about particular activities.

To improve communication between all parts of the Eaton House community, all staff now have school email addresses which should be helpful for everyone. This is not to encourage less face-to-face communication between staff and parents (which is always the best way for school and home to stay in touch). Nor should email be a substitute for picking up the telephone to the school office if there is an urgent message to be relayed to your son or writing a note in the homework diary if you wish to mention something to the class teacher or form tutor. I should emphasise that we are still happy to receive good, old-fashioned letters and I am particularly keen for communication to the Headmaster to come through my P.A., Ms Jane Doxford.

However, I am sure there will be occasions when an email may be an appropriate way of getting in touch. Please remember that the teaching staff will be looking after your sons during the day and will not have time to be checking emails all the time, so do not expect instant replies! Staff will try to check emails at the end of the day and get in touch when they have a free moment. If you have been communicating with staff in the past via their home emails, I would be grateful if you could now use the school email address which will be given to you in due course.

I am very pleased to be able to welcome some new staff into the fold. As mentioned in Mr Hepher's letter to parents of 25th June, Miss Worthington will be in charge of 4A and Miss Bailey will be Remove Alpha’s class teacher as well as Head of Religious Studies. Our Gap Student for the term will be Alex Lindsay, a former pupil.

I would also like to extend my congratulations to Luchie Lawrence who got married to Paul during the holiday; she will now be known as Mrs Cawood.

As usual at the beginning of the year the boys will be issued with calendars and copies of their timetables, together with new Homework Diaries. I would ask that you check through the relevant dates on the school calendars. Each pupil has been given two calendars, so that one can be kept at home for your benefit, while the other can be left here at school. Please check the Homework Diaries each evening for any notes from staff and also to understand what work has been set. I am sure you need no reminding that the diaries need to be initialled every evening.

Should you wish to contact me about any of the above, or indeed any other school-related matter, then do not hesitate to get in touch; I will be delighted to see you. Finally, I wish you and the boys a very happy and successful year.

With best wishes,

Mr J Edwards
Headmaster

Half Term Letter

28th May 2010

I thought I would take this opportunity to write to you before the half term break to go over a few points of house business as I know how quickly the next half will pass by.

Hot Weather
Am I tempting fate by even mentioning this? Most probably. However, the extreme temperatures on Monday reminded us all of how intense the sun can be and how important it is for the boys to be protected and equipped, even on less hot days. Sun hats and sun cream should be sent in with the boys which they can then wear and apply accordingly.

Water
Connected to the above yet also important in all weathers. A brief reminder that the boys are allowed to have small bottles of water with them in class which they can refill at Break / Lunch times. Keeping hydrated undoubtedly helps attentiveness, in addition to many other benefits, so I would encourage the boys to drink regularly.

Mobile Phones
The number of boys in possession of mobile phones appears to be growing. This is fine as long as the school rules regarding mobiles is adhered to. To reiterate:

Exams
The exam week this year is being run alongside the CE week which should provide a quiet and focussed environment for all boys. No doubt the half term break will provide a period of calm for revision purposes. I would ask that for this week in particular all pupils arrive at school in plenty of time for their first exam.

Diary Dates to remember

11-14 June  4s Trip to Isle of Wight (boys rtn to school Wed 16th June)

I do hope that you all manage to have an enjoyable half term break.

With very best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Mr S Hepher
Headmaster

Dear Parents,

Welcome Letter

20th April 2010

Dear Parents,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to the summer term after what was, I trust, an enjoyable and refreshing Easter holiday. I am sure that the boys are all eagerly awaiting all that lies ahead. Here at school the weeks passed quite quietly, with minor 'house keeping' jobs being the main focus and I thank the maintenance team for their continued efforts to keep ahead of 400 boys’ worth of daily wear and tear.

I do hope that not too many of you have been disrupted by the plane cancellations of late. At the time of writing Mr Lawrence is stuck in Athens and Mme Lena in Cyprus; I am hoping that they will return soon. If Mme Lena is not back by tomorrow then I will lead the 5s French trip and Mr Cassell will join the team in my stead. Ms Edmunds was caught in Spain but managed to jump aboard a mini bus which arrived back yesterday.

Trying to look at the positive side of this I expect many of you have experienced the enforced period of quiet over London for the last week. It is only at times like this when one realises just how much noise comes from overhead during the day, but in particular in the early hours of the morning and late at night. In this sense it has been a period of pleasant peace and hearing the birds in the morning so clearly has been most enjoyable.

The summer term brings with it the usual array of activities, trips, visits and, inevitably, academic challenges in the form of exams. The UVI, after their mocks next week, will be sitting their real CE papers in the week immediately after half-term, with the French and Maths orals in mid-May. Due to the nature of the dates in the latter half the whole school will also sit their end of year exams during the week of 7th June, immediately after half-term.

Your son should have returned home today with the School Calendar. This copy is for your benefit as he also has one here. Do please have a good look through the dates and events to help you plan your diary. For all year groups, with the exception of the LVI boys, there is a residential trip. You will already have received some notification about this but do please check that all paperwork and documentation is in order, especially for those going to Normandy. School Menus can be found, as usual, on the Web Site.

The timetable for the term remains almost identical to that of the spring. Notable exceptions being the Tennis/Gym/Swimming rotation. For the first half of the term 4A, RA and 5A will have swimming followed by gym, gym and tennis respectively in the second half. 4α and Rα will both have gym followed by swimming. 5α will have swimming followed by tennis and 5α will have swimming followed by tennis. For those boys who have tennis/gym in the morning please do feel free to send them in their whites; it seems an unnecessary waste of time for them to change on arrival at 8.30am! As usual non participants will be sent to the pool this term where they can read quietly with the accompanying member of staff.

The lost property situation, though generally continuing to improve, did manage to slip a little towards the end of the term. There remains a large amount of unclaimed kit in the designated receptacles in the cloakrooms; please do check it. In general the boys have been noticeably more organised and responsible but do please continue to encourage them to look after their kit. Please can I ask that you also reinforce what I say to them; that they should be responsible by helping others to look after kit and they should be helpful by handing back items of kit which may have been left on the floor of the changing room.

I would also remind you that all kit must be named on the outside; it does make redirecting it much easier and also helps the boys enormously when they are changing. Thank you.

The library proposal which we trialled last term appears to be working well so please do encourage your boys to make use of it. If there is a book which is not currently stocked by the library then we will purchase it upon request. This is a most effective way of ensuring stocks are kept up to date as well as encouraging the boys to read widely.

As the 11+ pre selection screenings begin to wind down for this year I am delighted to announce that to date we have had the most success ever in relation to candidates sitting the increasingly more competitive exams for KCS, Eton, St Paul’s, Tonbridge and Westminster before their 13+ CE in June 2012, with 80% of boys who sat securing at least one offer from those schools above. My congratulations go to all of the boys and my thanks to the staff team who continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the pupils are so well prepared.

Without wishing to tempt fate, as this is the summer term the boys will be out on the fields enjoying themselves as often as possible. Please could I ask that they are sent in with appropriate sun creams/blocks and their sun hats? The boys will spend at least 40 minutes every day outside and far longer during games afternoons, squad days or if involved in cricket matches. It is important therefore that they have the necessary protection; thank you. If your son has lost his hat he can purchase another from the top office. All boys in the 4s will, as usual, be provided with a hat at the beginning of term.

I have no doubt that this will be an enjoyable and busy term for all. Should you have any questions about any aspects of it, or the above, please do not hesitate to contact me.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Mr S Hepher

Summer 2010 Menu Information

15th April 2010

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the latest edition of the catering information letters once again. It’s Summer again and before we know it will be sports days and end of year events.

We continue to use pollack for the battered fillets and have sourced a product made from a whole piece of fish and not minced. We are introducing a baked salmon fillet in order to comply with the government legislation requiring us to provide ‘oily’ fish once every 3 weeks. The suppliers of these choices are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council who ensure that they come from well maintained and sustainable stocks. The quality and flavour of meat is extremely similar to cod.

Roast dinners are on the menus once a week and are very popular with pupils and staff alike. All roasts are served with a vegetarian gravy which is also suitable for most allergy sufferers and can be eaten by all at the school at present.

We have a freshly made tortilla wrap back on the menu filled with plenty of wholesome vegetables such as red peppers and tomatoes in the filling which are good providers of vitamin A and the chicken is breast meat only.

Filled baguettes are back and always prove popular with the pupils as they can have as many fillings as they like in an organic baguette.

We will also have our mini sausage pasta with our homemade pesto (nut free) and this has proved a popular choice in the past.

There are more fruit based pudding choices now that we are in the summer term.

We are now using a wholesale butcher (Heanens) based in Roehampton. They Achieved a 5 star hygiene rating from Wandsworth council who were so impressed with the quality offered that they now supply all of Wandsworth councils schools with their meats. This means that we get Fresh meats Cut Either the same day or the during the night and delivered fresh the day we want to use it. We use only fresh chickens still and are now getting a handmade unfrozen 4oz burger that is 100% beef and delivered fresh the day before use. Our roast joints are also now all fresh too.

We are now using wheat pasta and sauces that are enriched with vitamins to provide the full amounts of vitamins required by the new legislation. Wheat pasta is used so that celiac sufferers can eat it too.

A printout of exactly what levels of nutrients our menus provide and how we comply with the new legislation should also be available to see on the website and if anyone would like to know more on how this works please contact me.

Sports days will repeat last years format and not give out individual picnic bags where a lot of the items were wasted. Instead we will be allowing pupils to help themselves from a selection of fruits (bananas, melon & satsumas). These quench their thirst and give vital vitamins and potassium. There will also be pastries (muffins, flapjacks & mini doughnuts). These provide carbohydrates and sugar to replace lost energy. We will also have a selection of sandwiches and some savoury pies as well just to fill them up. Each pupil will be provided with their own bottle of water and each class will also have a large bottle of water as back up. These bottles can be filled at any time from the kitchen area of the pavilion. We will also be providing cold drinks for the adults but not any hot beverages unfortunately. There are vending facilities should you wish.

As always we are committed to providing a wholesome and healthy lunch within the new government legislation while at the same time trying to find new and better ingredients and products.

I hope that this is helpful in showing you how we put the menus together and the direction that we are trying to move towards. If any parents have any questions about the menus or food in general please feel free to contact me through the Manor office or if you are passing the kitchen and I am in just drop in and see me. Should you wish to have a specific meeting I will be only too happy to arrange this.

Headmaster's Letter

7th January 2010

Dear Parents,

I do hope that you managed to have an enjoyable and relaxing time during the Christmas holiday. I am sure that your children certainly had an exciting break and that they are now fully recharged for the term ahead, while you are probably ready for some time off!

As is always the case in the Spring Term there is a great deal to fit in to what is already a relatively short period of time. The calendar that your son has brought home contains all of the important dates and information so do please check it carefully. As usual, there is one copy for you and one which your son can keep in his blazer or desk.

You will notice that there is only one Parents’ Evening this term which will be for the UVI Year Group. This will be Common Entrance based and will focus solely on academic performance. All non-academic staff would be delighted to discuss progress with you however so do feel free to contact them separately should you feel the need. Once again the pupils are expected to attend this evening as well; I would be grateful if you could ensure that they are free on Thursday 11th March.

As you know much of my time is spent keeping in touch and up to speed with the Public Schools to which we send our boys every year. I will once again be showing some Heads around The Manor this term and, if your son is considering one of the schools which you will find on the calendar, do please ask him to see me so that I can introduce him to the relevant person should the opportunity arise. This term is also the time when I see all Removes parents about future schools choices and Miss Alicia will be contacting you shortly to arrange a mutually convenient time for this. I am aware that I have already seen some of you and, if this is the case, then I do not need to see you again until much later on! A reminder to any parents in the Fours who are considering St Paul’s, Marlborough or Wellington, that you will need to register your son as soon as possible to be sure of being asked to their assessments in the 5s/LVIs.

Swine flu reared its head towards the end of last term with a number of cases and I would predict more from January through to late February. As this is normally the term which is notorious for flu bugs anyway I would like to remind you of the procedure should your son be away from school. In all cases the school must be informed by 8.45am so that Registers can be filled in accordingly. If you son is absent for a prolonged period then the school should be told daily that he is off and then, upon his return, a written note should be sent in for our records. School notification is particularly necessary where swine flu is concerned as it is important to be able to inform parents of any instances in their son’s specific class / peer group. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

In the meantime, should you have any questions relating to any of the above or any other matters which you would like to discuss, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

With very best wishes to you all for the New Year and the term ahead,

Yours sincerely,

Mr S Hepher
Headmaster

Announcement of new Headmaster at Eaton House The Manor Preparatory School
from September 2010

19th December 2009

Dear Parents,

As you are aware we have been waiting to announce the successor to Mr Hepher as Headmaster of Eaton House The Manor Preparatory School. We are now delighted to confirm that Mr Jeremy Edwards has accepted the role and will start in September 2010.

Mr Edwards is currently Master at Westminster Under School and was appointed in April 2000. He was formerly an English teacher and then Deputy Headmaster at Emanuel School where he also spent time as Head of Drama and Head of Rowing. He has a B.A (Hons) in English and a PGCE awarded by the University of London as well as an M.A. from the Institute of Education in Educational Studies and Educational Management. He is married with three children; two daughters aged 19 and 17, and a son of 15.

Mr Edwards will be writing a letter of introduction to all our current and prospective parents early next term.

We are very excited by this appointment and look forward to introducing Mr Edwards to you at a number of formal and social occasions over the next few months.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,

Hilary Harper
Principal

Headmaster's Letter

2nd December 2009

Dear Parents,

After eighteen years of outstanding service here and within the Eaton House Group of Schools, it is with sadness that I write to inform you that Mr Sebastian Hepher will be leaving us at the end of July 2010. Mr Hepher has been offered the Headship at Eaton Square Schools and he has decided to accept.

We have all benefited enormously from Mr Hepher’s excellent leadership and dedication to Eaton House the Manor. He has played a major role in building the School up to its current position of being one of the top boys’ Prep Schools in London, recommended to Pre Prep parents by the major Public Schools around the country. He has been a leading voice on the School’s behalf through various associations of London Heads, IAPS and also internationally amongst those of the IBSC, while never losing sight of the most important aspect of the job, his pupils. The recent reference in the ISI report to the colour of the boys’ blood being red and green would certainly apply to that of their Headmaster.

I know that I speak on behalf of all parents, past and current, of all old and existing staff, when I express our gratitude for all that he has done for Eaton House The Manor. He deserves, and takes with him, our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.

Mr Hepher and the Board have worked closely together in the appointment of a leading London Prep School Head to become the new Headmaster of Eaton House The Manor. The new Headmaster has extensive experience of both the London Day and Boarding Schools systems, together with great success at CE and Scholarship at 13+. This will guarantee that the excellent standards of Eaton House The Manor are continued in all ways for the years to come. As his current school is still completing their announcement process, we have, for the time being, agreed to withhold his name. As soon as this process is complete we will inform parents.

There will be many opportunities over the coming months to say a fond farewell to Mr Hepher and also to meet his successor, details of which will follow. From this point on both Headmasters will be meeting on a regular basis to provide for the smoothest of possible handovers.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs. Hilary Harper
Principal

Headmaster's Letter

Dear Parents,

I trust that you all have managed to have an enjoyable summer and that the boys are now ready for the new academic year ahead. After the excitement of the Ashes matches the boys must now turn their attention to more academic matters.

Here at school there has been a lot of work for the various teams who were allocated to redecorate, refit and to build. In the Prep several rooms have been redecorated, as has the entrance hall on my side of the building and the carpet of the Maths room has been replaced. Obviously work has also been carried out in the Pre Prep and Nursery and my thanks, as ever, go to Mr Clarke and his reliable team for their efforts.

Timetable and Calendar

As usual your son will have been given his new timetable, along with his calendar and Homework Diary today. I would remind you all that the diary is an important means of communication between school and home and that it should be initialled daily. Please do be sure to check it each day and to discuss the contents with your son. Should you feel the need, do also use it to send in messages to his teachers. Book marks must also be filled in.

The calendar contains the main events of the term for the entire Prep. School. There will undoubtedly be other events happening during the course of the term which were not confirmed at the time of issue and you will be informed of these by the relevant members of staff in due course.

Long Weekend

You will note on the Calendar the introduction of a long weekend in November, from Friday 20th to Monday 23rd inclusive. As you will recall from one of the Parental Questionnaires we put forward the idea of a two week half term to allow the boys' time to recharge their batteries before what is always a long and tiring second half. The response to this was fairly evenly balanced yet we have opted for a slightly shorter option but one which is far less intrusive in relation to school days missed. I have no doubt that the boys will benefit from this and we will see a livelier group going through to the end of term. This also means that we will lengthen the final day of term across the year to end at 4.00pm.

Important Dates

I highlight some other dates for your attention. Once again we will be holding Information Evenings which will give the Class Teachers and Form Tutors an opportunity to talk with you about the year ahead, to give a brief synopsis of the curriculum being covered, and to give you some 'pointers' about the practicalities of life within your son's specific year group. The 4s Information Evening is also followed by the Social Evening and I do hope that you will be able to attend if your son is joining the Prep School this year. The dates for these are:
4s - Wednesday 16th September 5.30 - 8.00pm
Rs - LVIs inclusive Thursday 17th September 5.30 - 6.00pm

Homework and Early Room

Homework Class and all Clubs begin on Monday 14th September, as do the Peripatetic lessons. If you would like your son to take up an instrument and you have not yet spoken to Mrs Newbery, Head of Music, please do so as soon as possible. Exam season kicks off immediately after half term for the UVI boys, and during the week beginning16th November for those in the years below. The Parents' Evenings are towards the latter end of the term but those who have boys in the UVI should note that the pupils are also expected to attend. As the term is so long please do feel free to call in to discuss anything you may want to before the late November meetings.

For those boys using the Early Room and the Homework Class they should take note of a few points. All using the Early Room must return the consent form before being allowed to use it. They must also register on the daily sheet, which can be found in Miss Alicia's office, just around the corner from my study. The Early Room is only available to boys arriving before 8.15am. If boys arrive after this they must enter the school at 8.30am with everyone else. The Early Room is still located in History/RS, again beside Miss Alicia's office!

If your son is staying for Homework and, as the boys can be a little hungry at the end of the day, please do feel free to provide a light snack for them, as with break, and do your best to ensure that they save it until 4.00pm! All pupils should be seated and organised in the Homework rooms by 4.05pm so that they can achieve as much as possible before finishing at 5.00pm.

Yellow Badges

I would remind you that any boys who travel to or from school on their own must have a yellow badge worn on their blazer lapel. These may be obtained from Elisabeth if written permission is sought. The badges provide an immediate visual sign to all staff that permission has been granted and has proved very successful in the past.

Cyber-Bullying

I have of late become more and more concerned about 'cyber bullying'; bullying via mobile phones, chat sites on pcs, etc. As a staff we had an enlightening, if not somewhat disturbing, INSET on this last term and I have arranged for the boys to be given guidance on strategies to deal with these issues should they happen to them. I have asked that Childnet also give a session for parents which will be on the same date, Monday 19th October, at 7.00pm. I would encourage you to attend as there is a great deal of potential harm for our children which it is prudent to be aware of. More details to follow.

Mobile Phones

As you know the boys are only allowed mobile phones at school if they travel to or from school on their own. On occasion in the past phones have been misplaced, lost and have caused considerable anxiety for both parents and boys. This term I would like to trial a new system where the boys drop off their mobile phones to the top office on arrival and they collect them at 4.00pm before going home. This will hopefully avoid any more complications. All phones should be named or placed in a named bag/cover to prevent any misunderstandings.

Web Site

I am pleased to tell you that we have also launched a new school website at www.eatonhouseschools.com to give you and our prospective parents more access to information about the school, events and sporting fixtures in the forthcoming terms. You will also see this letter and the new 2009 School magazine, 'The Column' on the site.

New Library System

I am delighted to announce the introduction of a new system for the library when purchasing books. Should your son want to borrow a book which we do not currently have in stock he must see Mr Hayward who will then buy it forthwith. This should avoid the inevitable frustration which arises when a book is not on the shelf, while at the same time encouraging further reading!

Sports Kit

Finally, on the subject of Sports Kit, I am fully aware of the frustration that many of you have encountered in the past when trying to buy and order it. At the end of last term the School took the decision to move the provider to Perry Uniform and there have been inevitable teething problems while stock was transferred, etc. Rest assured that if your son does not have the correct kit today or for the next few weeks he will be given a period of grace! For further details do contact Perry Uniform at www.perryuniform.co.uk . I have no doubt that Perry will provide an excellent service in the future.

Should you have any questions about any of the points raised above or any in relation to any other topic then, as ever, do not hesitate to contact me. I wish you all a most productive term.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Mr S Hepher
