Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Half Term Letter

May 28th, 2010

Dear Parents,

I thought I would take this opportunity to write to you before the half term break to go over a few points of house business as I know how quickly the next half will pass by.

Hot Weather
Am I tempting fate by even mentioning this? Most probably. However, the extreme temperatures on Monday reminded us all of how intense the sun can be and how important it is for the boys to be protected and equipped, even on less hot days.

Sun hats and sun cream should be sent in with the boys which they can then wear and apply accordingly.

Water
Connected to the above yet also important in all weathers. A brief reminder that the boys are allowed to have small bottles of water with them in class which they can refill at Break / Lunch times. Keeping hydrated undoubtedly helps attentiveness, in addition to many other benefits, so I would encourage the boys to drink regularly.

Mobile Phones
The number of boys in possession of mobile phones appears to be growing. This is fine as long as the school rules regarding mobiles is adhered to. To reiterate:

  • Only boys travelling to / from school on their own can have a mobile in school.
  • All mobiles must be handed in to the top office on arrival and collected at the end of the day before leaving school.
  • Mobiles should be named.
  • Parents should not call during the day as the phones are locked away in the top office and they will not be answered.
  • Any phones found in the possession of a pupil during the day outside of the above hours will be confiscated.

Exams
The exam week this year is being run alongside the CE week which should provide a quiet and focussed environment for all boys. No doubt the half term break will provide a period of calm for revision purposes. I would ask that for this week in particular all pupils arrive at school in plenty of time for their first exam.

Eaton House Belgravia Welcome Letter

April 23rd, 2010

Dear Parents,

1. Welcome back to you all. We all look forward to the Summer Term with what I hope will be some nice weather and some exciting events planned. We have a busy time ahead of us all (please make a note of the term dates which will be displayed on our website) and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during the term.

2. I do hope that not too many of you have been disrupted by the plane cancellations. As I write, we have seven staff still stranded abroad. Some are due back on Friday and others we hope will return early next week. I have organised an assortment of cover with both agency and ex-staff and friends of the school. All have been wonderfully supportive and willing to help and I ask that you do the same until ‘normal business is resumed’!

3. Miss Emily and her new husband, Ed, married earlier this month. Her new name is Poynter.

4. We will be taking Boots Factor 25+ sun cream to Games and all outings. Staff will apply sun cream to the boys at their discretion. If you would prefer your son NOT to use the school sun cream, please inform his teacher in writing.

5. Eaton House Summer Caps should be in school as part of the boys’ Games Kit. Kindergarten boys will be given their new caps shortly. Boys should continue to wear their normal caps to and from school. All boys should have boot bags at school to take outdoor shoes to and from games.

6. Sports Day – Tuesday 6th July 10.00am. A key date for your diaries! Further information will be sent out nearer the time but if you are new to Eaton House, please make sure that you are able to watch and photograph/video the impressive ‘Blazers Off’ at the beginning of Sports Day. There will be the usual parents’ 3-legged race, so do get practising! As is the tradition, Mr Cooke is keen for old boys to help if, of course, they are on official leave from school.

7. Please make sure that contact details are up to date.

8. Please note that the Kindergartens should not be in school on Friday 11th June, as we have new boys visiting on that day.

9. Y3 boys are granted a rare but nonetheless necessary day off on Tuesday 15th June after PGL and a half day on Friday 21st May after Hill End. Collection is at 12.00pm in advance of the school play on Thursday May 13th and boys should not come into school until 10.30am on Friday 14th May.
The above leave is helpful to the running of the school as well as of benefit to the particular year groups. However, I strongly urge you NOT to take any other extra leave from school. I also ask that boys in any year group are not taken out of school early at the end of term.

Whilst I understand that siblings might have different end of term dates, it is important that all boys have the opportunity to experience the end of term and final year end assembly together. This is something that we very much value at Eaton House and boys will only have four chances to experience this before leaving us!

10. Please note the date of the Book Fair on Wednesday 23rd June. This will be running throughout the day. The Golden Treasury Book shop will man the sale all day and boys and parents will be encouraged to visit. There will be more information to follow and no doubt a request for helpers to offer their support at anytime during the day or evening.

11. Boys are being encouraged to learn ‘Life Skills’. These include being able to do up top buttons, tie shoe laces and know their home phone numbers, for example. Please help your sons with these valuable skills.

12. From now on, Mr Cooke will email team lists and match letters to parents. A copy will also be displayed in the No. 3 entrance hall.

13. There will be an opportunity for families to have ‘Mothers and Sons’ photographs taken on Wednesday 26th May. Some of you may wish to give these to fathers (some time in June…). Whatever the occasion, this will be a nice opportunity for you and the boys.

14. Think-a-link workshop, Friday 30th April. This is an exciting new workshop for the whole school focusing upon ‘a fun and easy way to learn and remember things’. www.thinkalink.co.uk. Details such as costs will be sent out in due course.

15. We have our usual number of theme days and events such as Maths Day and International Day; volunteers always welcome!

16. Please continue to bring in used postage stamps for the RSPB, collection box in the No. 3 hall.

17. There will not be any clubs on Wednesday 23rd June because of Parents’ Evening.

18. Please help to keep the boys ‘green’ by not sending in break with unnecessary packaging.

19. A reminder plea about naming all of your son’s uniform, kit and shoes…

As ever, if there is anything that you wish to discuss with myself or any of the staff, regarding the welfare of your son, please do contact us.

I look forward to seeing you all soon.

    Yours sincerely,

    Miss Lucy Watts
    Headmistress

Please see the nursery calendar for this term. Hopefully you all be able to attend the following events. We have The Barnardo’s Big Toddle on Wednesday 26th May, the Fete on 30th June and Sports Day on 7th July. More details will follow.

The lunch menus are available on our front notice board and on-line. Perry now supplies our uniform, though I have a small supply in the nursery. T-shirts and sweatshirts cost £8.50 each.

There will be no Parents Evening this term as written reports will be sent home on the last day of term.

The doors will be open from 11.50am to 12pm every day for pick up time. The children who stay for the afternoon sessions should be collected at 3.30pm.

If your child has any allergies that require an epipen, please bring one in a named bag to be kept in the Nursery office.

Eaton House The Vale Welcome Letter

    April 21st, 2010

    Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the start of the summer term – those of you who have indeed managed to get back despite volcanoes…I wonder how many were rescued by the navy? All funny travel anecdotes to me please!

I trust that you all managed to have good holidays before the travel chaos began, and we look forward to the children arriving back at school refreshed and ready to begin again. One of the Summer term events we look forward to is Sports Day, which will take place from 2 – 3 o’clock on the afternoon of Wednesday 23rd June.

Art Club continues with Miss Louisa and Miss Jude on Monday afternoons. French Club (Petit Pierrot) will be taking place again this term on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons – please see me as soon as possible if you have not yet registered your son or daughter for this and would like to do so. We don’t assume that children who took part last term will automatically do so again this term unless you fill in the relevant slips…
Tennis with Mr Bedford also continues on Thursday and Friday afternoons – again, please see me if you need further information.

    Another reminder about arrival time:
Please note that all pupils should arrive at school between 8.30 and 8.45. We have assembly three mornings a week, which begin at 8.50 – it is so important that the children have time to greet their teachers and friends, and to organise themselves, so please do get them here on time.

I am sure this will be a good, productive term and I look forward to seeing everyone as flights begin to get everyone back home.

    With best wishes

    April 20th, 2010

    Dear Parents,

    Welcome Back!

I do hope that everyone had a most enjoyable and relaxing break, without too many delays and problems caused by the volcanic eruption. It has been lovely welcoming the boys back to school so full of energy and enthusiasm for the term ahead.

Due to the travel disruptions, Mr Chambers is stuck in Egypt and Miss Liz in Oman. We hope they will be back soon!

    Staff News

We warmly welcome Katie Miller and Rob Stewart to the Pre-Prep staff. Rob will be Form Teacher for 2C and Katie will be a Teaching Assistant across the school. Miss Kim is settling into her new home in Scotland but retains a keen interest in the progress of those boys she has taught – we will keep in touch.

Eaton House The Manor Girls’ School Welcome Letter

    April 20th, 2010

    Dear Parents,

I hope that you have had a lovely, relaxing Easter holiday.  EHTM has staff and children who have not been able to fly back to the UK yet.  Mr Gillett is currently in Egypt but will return as soon as he can!

We have, as usual, a busy term, the first half being taken up with rehearsals for Dick Whittington.  We look forward to seeing you all on 27th May at 2.30 for the performance.  Do please ensure that costumes are in on time and that your daughter knows her lines!  F3/4 are going to Hilltop in Norfolk with the Y3 Pre Prep boys, for three days of fun activities, there are class trips planned and a whole school trip at the end of term when we are all going to Greenwich for an enjoyable day together.  We are holding a joint assembly with the Pre Prep to learn more about Islam and there is Sport Day to look forward to.  And we have a Parents v F3/4 and Staff rounders match – a first for the Girls’ School.  More about my idea later, this will be a lovely way to end the school year.

Could I ask you that you do not arrange your daughter’s birthday party on a school day. The girls get so excited on the day and then are tired the next so we do not manage to get much teaching done.  Many thanks.

Mrs Segrave and I finalised the staffing for September last term and we have an excellent, experienced team.  Mrs Nicola (who was Headmistress of EHTM Nursery School, has had a variety of teaching experience and is returning from maternity leave) will teach F4/5, Mrs Sue F3, Mrs Jane F2, Mrs Kirsten (who is returning from maternity leave and who taught F1 in the PP) F1 and the two Kindergartens will be taught by Miss Emily assisted by Miss Celestine (an ex-Vale School pupil of mine) and Miss Emma assisted by Miss Gracie.  We will continue to have plenty of support from the specialist part time staff as we do now.

I am very much looking forward to my last term in education – the Summer Term is always a particularly enjoyable one with lots going on, including my Retirement Party on 16th June.  I look forward to seeing you all there.

    Yours sincerely,

    Susie Lang

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Welcome Letter

    April 20th, 2010

    Dear Parents,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to the summer term after what was, I trust, an enjoyable and refreshing Easter holiday. I am sure that the boys are all eagerly awaiting all that lies ahead. Here at school the weeks passed quite quietly, with minor ‘house keeping’ jobs being the main focus and I thank the maintenance team for their continued efforts to keep ahead of 400 boys’ worth of daily wear and tear.

I do hope that not too many of you have been disrupted by the plane cancellations of late. At the time of writing Mr Lawrence is stuck in Athens and Mme Lena in Cyprus; I am hoping that they will return soon. If Mme Lena is not back by tomorrow then I will lead the 5s French trip and Mr Cassell will join the team in my stead. Ms Edmunds was caught in Spain but managed to jump aboard a mini bus which arrived back yesterday.

Trying to look at the positive side of this I expect many of you have experienced the enforced period of quiet over London for the last week. It is only at times like this when one realises just how much noise comes from overhead during the day, but in particular in the early hours of the morning and late at night. In this sense it has been a period of pleasant peace and hearing the birds in the morning so clearly has been most enjoyable.

The summer term brings with it the usual array of activities, trips, visits and, inevitably, academic challenges in the form of exams. The UVI, after their mocks next week, will be sitting their real CE papers in the week immediately after half-term, with the French and Maths orals in mid-May. Due to the nature of the dates in the latter half the whole school will also sit their end of year exams during the week of 7th June, immediately after half-term.

Your son should have returned home today with the School Calendar. This copy is for your benefit as he also has one here. Do please have a good look through the dates and events to help you plan your diary. For all year groups, with the exception of the LVI boys, there is a residential trip. You will already have received some notification about this but do please check that all paperwork and documentation is in order, especially for those going to Normandy. School Menus can be found, as usual, on the Web Site.

The timetable for the term remains almost identical to that of the spring. Notable exceptions being the Tennis/Gym/Swimming rotation. For the first half of the term 4A, RA and 5A will have swimming followed by gym, gym and tennis respectively in the second half. 4α and Rα will both have gym followed by swimming. 5α will have swimming followed by tennis and 5α will have swimming followed by tennis. For those boys who have tennis/gym in the morning please do feel free to send them in their whites; it seems an unnecessary waste of time for them to change on arrival at 8.30am! As usual non participants will be sent to the pool this term where they can read quietly with the accompanying member of staff.

The lost property situation, though generally continuing to improve, did manage to slip a little towards the end of the term. There remains a large amount of unclaimed kit in the designated receptacles in the cloakrooms; please do check it. In general the boys have been noticeably more organised and responsible but do please continue to encourage them to look after their kit. Please can I ask that you also reinforce what I say to them; that they should be responsible by helping others to look after kit and they should be helpful by handing back items of kit which may have been left on the floor of the changing room.

I would also remind you that all kit must be named on the outside; it does make redirecting it much easier and also helps the boys enormously when they are changing. Thank you.

The library proposal which we trialled last term appears to be working well so please do encourage your boys to make use of it. If there is a book which is not currently stocked by the library then we will purchase it upon request. This is a most effective way of ensuring stocks are kept up to date as well as encouraging the boys to read widely.

As the 11+ pre selection screenings begin to wind down for this year I am delighted to announce that to date we have had the most success ever in relation to candidates sitting the increasingly more competitive exams for KCS, Eton, St Paul’s, Tonbridge and Westminster before their 13+ CE in June 2012, with 80% of boys who sat securing at least one offer from those schools above. My congratulations go to all of the boys and my thanks to the staff team who continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the pupils are so well prepared.

Without wishing to tempt fate, as this is the summer term the boys will be out on the fields enjoying themselves as often as possible. Please could I ask that they are sent in with appropriate sun creams/blocks and their sun hats? The boys will spend at least 40 minutes every day outside and far longer during games afternoons, squad days or if involved in cricket matches. It is important therefore that they have the necessary protection; thank you. If your son has lost his hat he can purchase another from the top office. All boys in the 4s will, as usual, be provided with a hat at the beginning of term.

I have no doubt that this will be an enjoyable and busy term for all. Should you have any questions about any aspects of it, or the above, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    With best wishes,

    Yours sincerely,

    Mr S Hepher
    Headmaster

    Summer 2010 Menu Information

    April 15th, 2010

    Dear Parents,

Welcome to the latest edition of the catering information letters once again. It’s Summer again and before we know it will be sports days and end of year events.

We continue to use pollack for the battered fillets and have sourced a product made from a whole piece of fish and not minced. We are introducing a baked salmon fillet in order to comply with the government legislation requiring us to provide ‘oily’ fish once every 3 weeks.  The suppliers of these choices are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council who ensure that they come from well maintained and sustainable stocks. The quality and flavour of meat is extremely similar to cod.

Roast dinners are on the menus once a week and  are very popular with pupils and staff alike. All roasts are served with a vegetarian gravy which is also suitable for most allergy sufferers and can be eaten by all at the school at present.

We have a freshly made tortilla wrap back on the menu filled with plenty of wholesome vegetables such as red peppers and tomatoes in the filling which are good providers of vitamin A and the chicken is breast meat only.

Filled baguettes are back and always prove popular with the pupils as they can have as many fillings as they like in an organic baguette.

We will also have our mini sausage pasta with our homemade pesto (nut free) and this has proved a popular choice in the past.

There are more fruit based pudding choices now that we are in the summer term.

We are now using a wholesale butcher (Heanens) based in Roehampton. They Achieved a 5 star hygiene rating from Wandsworth council who were so impressed with the quality offered that they now supply all of Wandsworth councils schools with their meats. This means that we get Fresh meats Cut Either the same day or the during the night and delivered fresh the day we want to use it. We use only fresh chickens still and are now getting a handmade unfrozen 4oz burger that is 100% beef and delivered fresh the day before use. Our roast joints are also now all fresh too.

We are now using wheat pasta and sauces that are enriched with vitamins to provide the full amounts of vitamins required by the new legislation. Wheat pasta is used so that celiac sufferers can eat it too.

A printout of exactly what levels of nutrients our menus provide and how we comply with the new legislation should also be available to see on the website and if anyone would like to know more on how this works please contact me.

Sports days will repeat last years format and not give out individual picnic bags where a lot of the items were wasted. Instead we will be allowing pupils to help themselves from a selection of fruits (bananas, melon & satsumas). These quench their thirst and give vital vitamins and potassium. There will also be pastries (muffins, flapjacks & mini doughnuts). These provide carbohydrates and sugar to replace lost energy. We will also have a selection of sandwiches and some savoury pies as well just to fill them up. Each pupil will be provided with their own bottle of water and each class will also have a large bottle of water as back up. These bottles can be filled at any time from the kitchen area of the pavilion. We will also be providing cold drinks for the adults but not any hot beverages unfortunately. There are vending facilities should you wish.

As always we are committed to providing a wholesome and healthy lunch within the new government legislation while at the same time trying to find new and better ingredients and products.

I hope that this is helpful in showing you how we put the menus together and the direction that we are trying to move towards. If any parents have any questions about the menus or food in general please feel free to contact me through the Manor office or if you are passing the kitchen and I am in just drop in and see me. Should you wish to have a specific meeting I will be only too happy to arrange this.

Announcement of new Headmaster at Eaton House The Manor Preparatory School from September 2010

    December 18th, 2009

    Dear Parents,

As you are aware we have been waiting to announce the successor to Mr Hepher as Headmaster of Eaton House The Manor Preparatory School.  We are now delighted to confirm that Mr Jeremy Edwards has accepted the role and will start in September 2010.

Mr Edwards is currently Master at Westminster Under School and was appointed in April 2000.  He was formerly an English teacher and then Deputy Headmaster at Emanuel School where he also spent time as Head of Drama and Head of Rowing. He has a B.A (Hons) in English and a PGCE awarded by the University of London as well as an M.A. from the Institute of Education in Educational Studies and Educational Management. He is married with three children; two daughters aged 19 and 17, and a son of 15.

Mr Edwards will be writing a letter of introduction to all our current and prospective parents early next term.

We are very excited by this appointment and look forward to introducing Mr Edwards to you at a number of formal and social occasions over the next few months.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

    Yours sincerely

    Principal

Change of Headteacher at Eaton House The Manor Prep

    December 3rd, 2009

    Dear Parents,

After eighteen years of outstanding service here and within the Eaton House Group of Schools, it is with sadness that I write to inform you that Mr Sebastian Hepher will be leaving us at the end of July 2010. Mr Hepher has been offered the Headship at Eaton Square Schools and he has decided to accept.

We have all benefited enormously from Mr Hepher’s excellent leadership and dedication to Eaton House the Manor. He has played a major role in building the School up to its current position of being one of the top boys’ Prep Schools in London, recommended to Pre Prep parents by the major Public Schools around the country. He has been a leading voice on the School’s behalf through various associations of London Heads, IAPS and also internationally amongst those of the IBSC, while never losing sight of the most important aspect of the job, his pupils. The recent reference in the ISI report to the colour of the boys’ blood being red and green would certainly apply to that of their Headmaster.

I know that I speak on behalf of all parents, past and current, of all old and existing staff, when I express our gratitude for all that he has done for Eaton House The Manor. He deserves, and takes with him, our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.

Mr Hepher and the Board have worked closely together in the appointment of a leading London Prep School Head to become the new Headmaster of Eaton House The Manor.  The new Headmaster has extensive experience of both the London Day and Boarding Schools systems, together with great success at CE and Scholarship at 13+. This will guarantee that the excellent standards of Eaton House The Manor are continued in all ways for the years to come. As his current school is still completing their announcement process, we have, for the time being, agreed to withhold his name. As soon as this process is complete we will inform parents.

There will be many opportunities over the coming months to say a fond farewell to Mr Hepher and also to meet his successor, details of which will follow. From this point on both Headmasters will be meeting on a regular basis to provide for the smoothest of possible handovers.

    Yours sincerely,

    Mrs. Hilary Harper
    Principal
