Eaton House Prep Summer Term 2013 Welcome Newsletter

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a restful break and that the boys are looking forward to the new term. The theatre was safely demolished over the holiday and school is open and functioning normally. The building team will be working behind protective screens and they have a separate entry point from the pupils (the path from Wix’s Lane, behind the Girls’ School), so I can reassure you that the pupils’ education will be almost completely unaffected by the works. Assemblies, productions and concerts will take place in the Sports Hall for the next four terms.

Much went on at school in the second half of the Spring Term and I share with you some of the boys’ splendid achievements from February and March.

13+ London Day School Entrance Examinations

A group of Year 8 boys sat entrance examinations to a number of London day schools last term and I am delighted to report that they all performed superbly in the examinations. Many congratulations to the following boys who will be heading to the following schools in September:

Nikita Gurbatov – City of London
Kunaal Hireker – Alleyn’s
Oliver Mawdsley – Alleyn’s (also awarded a Sports Exhibition)
Zed Wakefield - Dulwich
Geordie Wass - Emanuel

Although Anthony Bennett is down for St Paul’s, we must also congratulate him on being awarded an Academic Scholarship by Dulwich.

Young Art Competition

Once again the boys have worked hard on their entries for the annual Young Art competition organised by the Royal College of Art. The following seven boys are to be congratulated on having their work selected to be exhibited at the Royal College later in the year:
Alexander Senior (4AH), Zach Daeschner-Dawson (4LM), Magnus Ellingsen (5JL), Tom Hill (5JL), Alimorad Marandi (6CL), William Richards (7AS) and Kunaal Hireker (8AW).

Primary Maths Olympiad

Theo Chevis, Daniel Kaddaj and Edward Richards (all Year 6) performed brilliantly in the Primary Maths Challenge earlier in the year and were invited to compete in the Primary Maths Olympiad in February. They were part of a very select group of primary-age children in the UK who have a particular gift for mathematics and they again acquitted themselves extremely well in this most challenging of tests. Well done to all three boys.

Year 4 Play : “Puss in Boots”

The Year 4 boys staged a glorious production of “Puss in Boots” in early March. The boys had all worked extremely hard at rehearsals during the term and they gave us a real treat. There were exceptional performances from the leading actors, with Wilf Inglis and Gabriel Levesque sharing the central role of Puss and both boys excelling. The whole cast performed brilliantly and it was a very difficult decision to choose just one boy to receive the Junior Drama Cup, but Bertie Gosling was selected for his confident, stylish performance as the King. Many congratulations to all the boys and to the talented directorial team of Mrs Hardwick, Miss Ferguson and Miss Mackie, with tremendous support from Mrs Freer as Musical Director. To get all 49 boys on stage was a logistical challenge in itself, but it was a really splendid evening. Bravo!

Senior Play: “A Gallop Through History”

A light-hearted look at some major historical events, “A Gallop Through History” was performed by boys from Years 7 and 8 at the end of March. They rehearsed after school for eight weeks and gave us a fast-paced production, full of humour and some unusual insights into history! It was great fun and we offer congratulations to all the cast on their excellent performances. Well done to Gaspard Baroudel on being awarded the Drama Prize in Final Assembly and many thanks to Mr Rixham, as ever, for all his hard work last term.

House Music Competition

After the House Singing competition in February, we enjoyed the second part of the House Music Competition in March – for House Bands as well as individual performers – which provided a fantastically varied repertoire for an appreciative audience of parents and family members. The individual winners of the different sections were Anthony Bennett (piano), Henry Darell-Brown (singing) and Theo Julin (violin). The winning House Band was Balmoral, with the overall prize also going to Balmoral. Many congratulations to all who took part from all four Houses. Particular thanks must go to Mrs Freer who masterminded everything so efficiently.

Public Speaking Competition

The senior finals (Years 7 & 8 ) of the Public Speaking Competition took place at the beginning of March and the finalists performed with great panache. The following were selected as winners of their respective year groups: Kulraj Soor (Year 7) and Kunaal Hireker (Year 8 ).

House Chess Competition

The House Chess competition came to an end in March and we congratulate our overall winner, Oliver Vincent, but we offer commiserations to our former champion, Nikita Gurbatov, who was very unwell in the last few weeks of term and was unable to defend his trophy.

Visiting Author : Damian Dibben

As part of our World Book Day celebrations we were delighted to hear from Damian Dibben,
author of “The History Keepers” series. The boys were enthralled by his insights into being a
novelist and gripped by his reading of extracts from his first two books.

General Knowledge Challenge

Our junior and senior teams acquitted themselves very well in the national Satips General Knowledge Challenge last term. Rory Muirhead was awarded the General Knowledge Cup in Final Assembly and we offer congratulations to the five scoring members of both teams:

Senior Team : Rory Muirhead (top scorer), Oliver Vincent, Freddy Campbell-Gray, Nicolas Gardner and Luke Player.

Junior Team : Tom Klafkowski (top scorer), Oscar Muirhead, Oliver Gordon-Brown, Sebastian Clarke and Oliver Lewey.

Sports Round-Up

The cross-country races in March brought bright sunshine and excellent support from parents as the boys raced around Clapham Common. Gaspard Baroudel won the senior event, with Zakariya Gaunt in 2nd place and Jack Hunter-Lees 3rd. Sam Smith was the highest-placed Year 6 boy, in 8th place overall. Max Eastwood won the junior event, with Ben Walsh in 2nd and Tom Hill 3rd. Lucas Jones was the highest-placed Year 4 boy, in 5th place overall.

The rugby and hockey matches were badly affected by the rainy weather last term, but notable rugby successes were chalked up by the under-9s against Thomas’s and Oakfield, the under-10s against Oliver House, the Hall and Harrodian, the under-11s against St Philip’s and 1st XV against Northcote Lodge (12 – 0). Oliver Vincent was awarded the Rugby Excellence Cup in Final Assembly.

Final Assembly

At Final Assembly prizes were awarded to the following boys:

Nicholas Lewey 4KF Patrick McCourt
Joshua Amoako 4LM Zach Daeschner-Dawson
Jasper Sodha 5NM Jack Middleton

Staff News

I am sure you will want to join me in congratulating Mrs Louise Nickalls (and her husband) on the news that she is expecting her first child in October.

Summer Term Events

I trust your son has brought home the new Summer Term calendar for you; please highlight the key dates that affect you and your son.

I wish the best of luck to the Year 8 boys doing their Common Entrance “mock” examinations next week.

I say “Bon Voyage” to the boys heading off on residential trips next week (Year 6 to France and Year 7 to Flatford Mill) and to the Year 5 boys who are travelling to Osmington Bay in Dorset on 29th April. As well as being great fun, these trips are so important in developing the boys’ collaborative skills and teaching them how to work and live together harmoniously. My thanks, as ever, go out to the organising members of staff.

I hope that the boys have a happy, successful term and that the sun shines throughout the summer months!

Best wishes,

Jeremy Edwards

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Half Term Letter

Friday, February 15th, 2013

Dear Parents,

It has been an action-packed start to 2013 and the boys have been very busy over the last six weeks.

Inspection Feedback
We had a hugely successful inspection last week from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).  A team of experienced inspectors, many of them current or former headteachers, spent four days immersing themselves in school life and they were impressed by the pupils’ willingness to learn and their friendly, enthusiastic, courteous manner.

The children were observed in class and in extra-curricular activities and there were various meetings where pupils were invited to talk about their work or school life in general.  The quality of the teaching, the pastoral care, the range of activities and the leadership and management of the school were all praised. Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Welcome Letter

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

Dear Parents,

A warm welcome back to the new academic year at Eaton House The Manor. I do hope that the summer holiday was enjoyable for you all and that the boys are looking forward to the new term. Olympic enthusiasm touched upon obsession at times in the Edwards household, but what a fantastic experience it has been to witness the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics/Paralympics all within a few months!

As you know, we have moved to a three-form entry this year and a new Year 4 classroom has been created next to the music rooms, where the Staff Room used to be. For those who are concerned that the staff will not have a place to sip their coffee, we have created a new Staff Room on the top floor!

I am very pleased to be able to welcome some new staff into the fold. Miss Louise Mackie is 4LM’s class teacher and Miss Aideen Seymour becomes Head of Geography and 7AS’s form tutor. Mr Chris Wilson joins us for a year as a Teaching Assistant in the PE and Games department before embarking on his PGCE course in September 2013 and Mr Alex Woods will be an additional Gap Student for the term, having been Head Boy at EHTM before spending five successful years at Winchester College. My new PA is Mrs Francesca Morgan and if you wish to contact her by email, please note her address: fmorgan@eatonhouseschools.com

The boys have been issued today with school calendars, homework diaries and copies of the school magazine, The Column. Each pupil has been given two calendars, so that one can be kept at home for your benefit, while the other can be left here at school. Please check the homework diaries each evening for any notes from staff and also to understand what work has been set.

On the calendars you will note that we have welcome evenings for parents coming up very soon. You are invited to come to school for a glass of wine at 5.30 pm, a short talk from me at 5.45 pm followed by an opportunity to meet your son’s new class teacher in the classroom. You will be free to leave at 6.30 pm and I do hope you will be able to attend. I highlight the dates below:

Tuesday 11th September : Year 8 (library)
Wednesday 12th September : Year 4 (theatre)
Monday 17th September : Year 6 (library)
Tuesday 18th September : Year 5 (theatre)
Wednesday 19th September : Year 7 (library)

I look forward to seeing you all very soon and wish the boys a very happy and successful year.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Headmaster’s Letter

Friday, July 13th, 2012

Dear Parents,

It has been another fantastically busy term and I look back at some of the highlights from the last eleven weeks.

Year 4 Play : “Wind in the Willows”
The Year 4 boys staged a glorious production of “Wind in the Willows” in May. The boys had all worked extremely hard at rehearsals during the Spring Term and they gave us a real treat. There were exceptional performances from Rat (Sebastian Clarke), Mole (Oscar Muirhead), Badger (Tom Klafkowski) and Toad (Louis Foster) and the whole cast performed brilliantly. Many congratulations to all the boys and to the talented directorial team of Mrs Hardwick and Miss Ferguson, with splendid support from Miss Lowe, Mrs Newbery, Miss Allen and the backstage team.

Jubilee Celebrations
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in style on 1st June. The boys wore great costumes, their art work in the entrance hall was wonderful and we shared a delightful picnic whilst being serenaded by the Vocal Ensemble singing “O Taste and See” by R.V.Williams, the anthem sung at the Coronation sixty years ago. An afternoon of House games (all diamond-shaped, of course) concluded a very happy day. We hope you will all treasure your Eaton House commemorative mugs.

U.K. Junior Mathematical Challenge
On the first day of the summer term the boys in Years 7 and 8 took part in this national mathematical competition. Of the 45 boys who sat the papers, an impressive number (25) achieved marks which qualify for gold, silver and bronze certificates. 7 boys reached the gold standard, with 9 qualifying for silver and 9 for bronze awards. Certificates were presented to the boys in Final Assembly and special congratulations go to Oliver Vincent who scored the highest mark of all the EHTM candidates.

Residential Trips
Successful trips have taken place this term for three year groups, with Year 5 heading off to Osmington at the beginning of May in the same week that the Year 6 boys travelled to Normandy. After Common Entrance, the Year 8 boys had the pleasure of spending a week in the Lake District. I thank all staff who helped with these expeditions and the organisers in particular – Mme Lena, Mr Lottering and Mr Waring.

Visiting Speakers
Bertie Portal, the actor, came to school in May to tell the boys about his extraordinary row across the Atlantic with James Cash. He showed us some amazing photos and told us a particularly terrifying tale of having to lie still in the cramped sleeping quarters of the boat for days while a tropical storm raged outside.

Luke Bedford, our tennis coach, also spoke to the boys in May about his grandfather’s experience of competing in the 1948 Olympics in London and winning a gold medal for GB in the 4 x 400 relay team. Let us hope for plenty of similar stories to emerge from the 2012 Olympics!

Sports News
We had almost perfect weather for our annual Sports Day at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park; the sun came out and we were lucky to avoid the rain. There was plenty of honest endeavour from all our competitors and some school records tumbled. I offer particular congratulations to Charlie Broad, the Senior Victor Ludorum, and Jude Russell, our Junior Victor Ludorum, and thank Mr Russell and my colleagues for organising the day so efficiently. Our new school record holders are Charlie Broad in the senior high jump (1.63 metres), Oliver Fox in the senior 800 metres (2minutes 33 seconds) and Jude Russell in the Year 5 100 metres (14.66 seconds).

Although the weather has been appalling this summer, some cricket matches have managed to go ahead and the 1st XI has enjoyed memorable victories over Thomas’s Battersea and Northcote Lodge. Our under-12 XI also scored a handsome victory over Sussex House, with Jack Hunter-Lees scoring a tremendous unbeaten century.

There were plenty of other victories to enjoy… the under-9s defeated Ibstock Place, with Leo Farzad taking a hat-trick wicket maiden, the under-10s defeated Sussex House and The Hall, and the under-11s beat The Hall and Hornsby House, with Kulraj Soor scoring 41 runs in the Hornsby game.

Poetry Competition
An excellent Poetry Competition was organised by Ms Lively this term and all the finalists rose to the occasion superbly. I congratulate the following boys on winning their different sections, either by reciting famous poems or their own work: Damian Flore (Year 4), Max Haigh (Year 5), Sebastian Galica (Year 6), Nicolas Gardner (Year 7) and Casper Woods (Year 8).

Summer Concert
A fantastic summer concert took place this week, with scores of performers of all ages and abilities providing the entertainment. It was wonderful to hear James Tamlyn performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for two ‘cellos in G minor with Mrs Newbery and there were many other highlights. Charlie Broad’s rich voice suited “Cry Me a River” quite beautifully, the Vocal Ensemble excelled in their rendition of “Vois sur ton Chemin” by Barratier and there was a wonderful finale with eighty boys on stage singing a medley from “Les Miserables”. Thanks, as ever, go to Mrs Newbery, Mr Freer and all the music staff for their splendid work this year.

Music Recital : Meng Yang Pan
This week many of the boys had the opportunity to hear a performance of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” by the acclaimed young pianist, Meng Yang Pan, in our theatre. We were astounded by the delicacy and strength of her playing. It was a real treat.

Summer Photography Competition
I hope you have all received a letter from Miss Allen about our summer photography competition and that the boys will snap away during their holidays. I look forward to seeing their photographs (on the theme of water) in September.

Year 8 Leavers
At the Year Eight Leavers’ Party last week I paid tribute to the excellent contributions the boys have made in every area of school life. It is an outstanding year group and we hope that they will all be happy and successful in their new schools. The boys provided some wonderful entertainment for staff and parents during the evening and it was a most enjoyable occasion.

Mrs Laura Williams
We say goodbye to Mrs Williams today. She has been head of the geography department for the last 7 years and is an utterly dedicated colleague. Everything she does is carefully planned and the annual field trips to Flatford Mill for the Year 7 boys have always been hugely successful. Geography results at Common Entrance are always strong at EHTM and this year they have been quite exceptional. She leaves the department in excellent shape, but is taking a break from teaching to look after her two young children. We thank her for all that she has done for the school and hope that she will come back and visit us very soon.

New Staff for September
Miss Aideen Seymour tales over as Head of Geography and becomes 7AS form tutor.
Miss Louise Mackie is the new Year 4 class teacher (4LM).
Mr Alex Woods, an old boy of EHTM (and a former Head Boy), will be an additional Gap Student for the Autumn Term.

Welcome Evenings in September
Please make a note of the dates of the September welcome evenings when I will say a few words about the year ahead and you will have an opportunity to meet your son’s new form teacher over a glass of wine. All the meetings begin at 5.45pm.

Tuesday 11th : Year 8
Wednesday 12th : Year 4
Monday 17th : Year 6
Tuesday 18th : Year 5
Wednesday 19th : Year 7

I hope you have a wonderful summer holiday and I look forward to seeing you again on Thursday 6th September.

Best wishes,
Jeremy Edwards

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Headmaster’s Letter

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

Dear Parents,

Staff News
I am afraid we will have to say goodbye to Mrs Laura Williams in July; after seven years on the staff of EHTM, she will be taking a break from teaching to look after her two young children and possibly move out of London.  She has been an excellent, dedicated  colleague and we thank Mrs Williams for all the splendid work she has done in the geography department here and wish her every happiness in all her future ventures.

We have appointed Miss Aideen Seymour to be our new Head of Geography for September and she will also be a Year 7 form tutor.  Miss Seymour graduated from University College, Cork in 2002 with a joint honours degree in Geography and History.  She completed her Higher Diploma in Education in 2005 and has been teaching abroad (in Oman) and in the UK since then. For the last two years she has been teaching at Latymer Prep School in Hammersmith.

With our new Year 4 intake expanding to three classes in September, Miss Louise Mackie joins us as a Year 4 class teacher.  Miss Mackie graduated from Nottingham University in 2009 with an honours degree in Classical Civilisation and has been teaching this year at Horsmonden Primary School whilst completing her Graduate Teacher Training Programme.

Quiz Night : Friday 25th May
Our charity Quiz Night takes place next week and Mr Jeans has been busy researching lots of challenging questions for staff and parents to puzzle over.  Whether your area of expertise is politics, history, the tube stations of London or dodgy 80s pop bands, this is the quiz for you!  We still have space for more parents to attend and we would love to see you here next Friday.  If you want to book a table of eight or wish to come along on your own, please contact Jane Doxford, my PA, as soon as possible.  We are keen to finalise numbers by Tuesday 22nd May.

The doors open at 6.45pm, the quiz begins at 7.00pm and we will supply table cloths, cutlery and wine glasses.  There will be an auction on the night to raise funds for Trinity Hospice and, if you are able to donate a prize, please get in touch with Mr Lennox-Hilton or Jane Doxford as soon as possible.

For those who have already signed up, a few words about what you need to bring :
(a)  A picnic supper (to be consumed at around 8.30 when Mr Jeans takes a break from asking questions)
(b)  Liquid refreshments (although drinks will be available on the night).

Diamond Jubilee Celebration : Friday 1st June
On Friday 1st June, we will be holding our very own celebration for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  We will be asking the boys to dress up in clothes appropriate to a particular decade of the Queen’s 60-year reign.  The Year 4 boys will be dressing in clothes from the 50s, Year 5 – the 60s, Year 6 – the 70s, Year 7 – the 80s and Year 8 – the 90s.  We would, of course, like to see as much red, white and blue as possible!

After a special picnic at lunchtime there will be some Diamond Jubilee-inspired games on the Common and school will finish slightly early at 3.00pm. Please arrange to collect your son at 3.00pm.  There will be no after-school clubs on 1st June and the school buses will leave at 3.05 pm.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Welcome Letter

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a restful break and that the boys are looking forward to the new term. Much went on at school in the second half of the Spring Term and I share with you some of the boys’ splendid achievements from February and March.

13+ London Day School Entrance Examinations
Two Year 8 boys sat entrance examinations to a number of London day schools last term and I am delighted to report that they both performed superbly in the examinations and were in the happy position of having a choice of senior schools. Many congratulations to the following boys:
Toby Morrison :  Whitgift
Oles Morris :  Emanuel (also awarded a music scholarship by Royal Russell School)

Senior Play: “Macbeth”
An abridged version of “Macbeth” was performed by boys from Years 7 and 8 at the end of March. It was a brave choice of play and the boys rose to the challenge manfully. There were some excellent performances and, in particular, we congratulate Milo Osborne-Young (Banquo) and Charlie Broad (Lady Macbeth) who were awarded Drama Prizes in Final Assembly. Many thanks to the boys who made up a highly efficient technical team and Miss Allen who offered invaluable help with the props and backdrop. To Mr Rixham we say “Bravo!” for having the courage to offer the boys the chance to tackle serious drama in their Prep School years.

Young Art Competition
Once again the boys have worked hard on their entries for the annual Young Art competition organised by the Royal College of Art. Young Art is now the largest annual exhibition of its kind in London where young artists have the opportunity to exhibit their work at one of the UK’s most prestigious venues. After the House Singing competition in February, we enjoyed the second part of the House Music Competition in March – for House Ensembles as well as individual performers – which provided a fantastically varied repertoire for an appreciative audience of parents and family members. The individual winners of the different sections were Hugh Spaughton (piano), Tom Klafkowski (singing) and James Tamlyn (cello). The winning House Choir was Balmoral and Windsor’s Ensemble was victorious, with the overall prize going to Arundel.

Many congratulations to Arundel and well done to all who took part from all four Houses. Particular thanks must go to Mrs Newbery and Mr Freer who masterminded everything so efficiently.

General Knowledge Challenge
Our junior and senior teams acquitted themselves very well in the national Satips General Knowledge Challenge last term. Nicholas Hamber was awarded the General Knowledge Cup in Final Assembly and we offer congratulations to the five scoring members of both teams:

Senior Team

Nicholas Hamber (top scorer), Charlie Broad, Oliver Vincent, James Tamlyn and James Maidment.

Junior Team
Rory Muirhead (top scorer), William Richards, Gaspard Baroudel, Luke Player and Oliver Gordon-Brown.

Sports Round-Up
The cross-country races in March brought bright sunshine and excellent support from parents as the boys raced around Clapham Common. Oliver Fox won the senior event in a new school record, with Gaspard Baroudel in 2nd place and James Sloan 3rd. Sam Smith won the junior event, with Kit Bellman in 2nd and Christopher Sloan 3rd. The rugby and hockey matches were keenly contested throughout the term, with victories hard to come by for some of the teams, but notable rugby successes were chalked up by the 1st XV against St Philip’s (31-5) and the under-9s against Ibstock Place (10-0) and James Tamlyn was awarded the Rugby Excellence Cup.

House Chess Competition
The House Chess competition came to an end in March and we congratulate our overall winner, Nikita Gurbatov (7SA), who retained his title for the fourth time, and the year group winners – Jasper Sodha (Year 4), Oliver Gordon-Brown (Year 5), Max de la Guerra (Year 6) and Alexander Spencer (Year 8).

Staff News
We welcome Mrs Louise Nickalls to the staff this term. She has joined us from Prospect House School and will be teaching maths within the Learning Enrichment department and will also teach science in the Prep School from September.

I am sure parents and boys will be keen to congratulate Miss Worthington who got married on 31st March and will now be known as Mrs Hardwick.

Summer Term Events
I trust your son has brought home the new Summer Term calendar for you. I expect you will be highlighting a number of key dates, but I would like to draw your attention to a few events:

I wish the best of luck to the Year 8 boys doing their Common Entrance “mock” examinations next week.

I say “Bon Voyage” to the boys heading off on residential trips next week (Year 6 to France and Year 5 to Osmington Bay in Dorset). As well as being great fun, these trips are so important in developing the boys’ collaborative skills and teaching them how to work and live together harmoniously. My thanks, as ever, go out to the organising members of staff.

The Year 4 boys will be performing “Wind in the Willows” in the Theatre on Thursday 10th May at 6.00 pm. I hope you can be there to support them and I look forward to seeing you all then.

Please note that the Charity Quiz Night takes place on Friday 25th May at 7.00 pm in the Theatre – an occasion when parents and staff can get together and have a bit of fun, whilst raising money for Trinity Hospice. Tickets can be reserved through Jane Doxford and I do hope you will be able to come along.

I hope that the boys have a happy, successful term and that the weather improves very soon!

Best wishes,
Jeremy Edwards
