Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Half Term Letter

Friday, February 15th, 2013

Dear Parents,

It has been an action-packed start to 2013 and the boys have been very busy over the last six weeks.

Inspection Feedback
We had a hugely successful inspection last week from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).  A team of experienced inspectors, many of them current or former headteachers, spent four days immersing themselves in school life and they were impressed by the pupils’ willingness to learn and their friendly, enthusiastic, courteous manner.

The children were observed in class and in extra-curricular activities and there were various meetings where pupils were invited to talk about their work or school life in general.  The quality of the teaching, the pastoral care, the range of activities and the leadership and management of the school were all praised. Eaton House The Vale Welcome Letter

Thursday, September 6th, 2012

Dear Parents,

For those of you joining us for the first time, a very warm welcome, and to our returning pupils and families, welcome back.

We have new faces amongst the staff this term, all of whom I am sure you will get to know as the term progresses. Our new staff include Miss Laura as the Teaching Assistant in Kindergarten, Miss Catherine as the Teaching Assistant in Form 1 as well as being our new French teacher, Mr Gale who will be the part-time Class Music teacher and Miss Kaye as the Form 1 Class teacher. We also have Miss Maddie as a Gap Year assistant, and Mr Dietz who is a student from Germany. Mr Fabian will continue as Nursery Assistant in the mornings, and in the afternoons he will act as and Administrative Assistant to me.

Could I make my usual request for you to please check the term dates on the school website so that you can plan your holidays accordingly? Half term is the week of 22nd October, and we will have a long weekend with Friday 23rd November as a holiday. Please also do keep an eye on the website for dates for Parents’ Evenings, Nativity and so on.

I would like to invite you to an informal information and drinks evening next Tuesday, 11th September. The class teachers will be in their classrooms at 6pm to give you a brief outline of some aspects of your child’s curriculum, after which I would be delighted if you could join me in the Hall for a glass of wine between 6.15 and 7.30.

I am sure the children will settle down very quickly as always. Do take them into their classrooms for the first couple of days; please don’t stay long though, as they will calm down much sooner if you leave them and us to it!

We look forward to a happy and successful term – the Vale community spirit is always very much in evidence and all new parents and pupils will find they are warmly welcomed by everyone. Please do feel free to talk to us and we will answer any questions you have as best we can.

With best wishes for a wonderful Autumn term,

Mr R. Greenwood
Headmaster

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Welcome Letter

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

Dear Parents,

A warm welcome back to the new academic year at Eaton House The Manor. I do hope that the summer holiday was enjoyable for you all and that the boys are looking forward to the new term. Olympic enthusiasm touched upon obsession at times in the Edwards household, but what a fantastic experience it has been to witness the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics/Paralympics all within a few months!

As you know, we have moved to a three-form entry this year and a new Year 4 classroom has been created next to the music rooms, where the Staff Room used to be. For those who are concerned that the staff will not have a place to sip their coffee, we have created a new Staff Room on the top floor!

I am very pleased to be able to welcome some new staff into the fold. Miss Louise Mackie is 4LM’s class teacher and Miss Aideen Seymour becomes Head of Geography and 7AS’s form tutor. Mr Chris Wilson joins us for a year as a Teaching Assistant in the PE and Games department before embarking on his PGCE course in September 2013 and Mr Alex Woods will be an additional Gap Student for the term, having been Head Boy at EHTM before spending five successful years at Winchester College. My new PA is Mrs Francesca Morgan and if you wish to contact her by email, please note her address: fmorgan@eatonhouseschools.com

The boys have been issued today with school calendars, homework diaries and copies of the school magazine, The Column. Each pupil has been given two calendars, so that one can be kept at home for your benefit, while the other can be left here at school. Please check the homework diaries each evening for any notes from staff and also to understand what work has been set.

On the calendars you will note that we have welcome evenings for parents coming up very soon. You are invited to come to school for a glass of wine at 5.30 pm, a short talk from me at 5.45 pm followed by an opportunity to meet your son’s new class teacher in the classroom. You will be free to leave at 6.30 pm and I do hope you will be able to attend. I highlight the dates below:

Tuesday 11th September : Year 8 (library)
Wednesday 12th September : Year 4 (theatre)
Monday 17th September : Year 6 (library)
Tuesday 18th September : Year 5 (theatre)
Wednesday 19th September : Year 7 (library)

I look forward to seeing you all very soon and wish the boys a very happy and successful year.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Headmaster’s Letter

Friday, July 13th, 2012

Dear Parents,

It has been another fantastically busy term and I look back at some of the highlights from the last eleven weeks.

Year 4 Play : “Wind in the Willows”
The Year 4 boys staged a glorious production of “Wind in the Willows” in May. The boys had all worked extremely hard at rehearsals during the Spring Term and they gave us a real treat. There were exceptional performances from Rat (Sebastian Clarke), Mole (Oscar Muirhead), Badger (Tom Klafkowski) and Toad (Louis Foster) and the whole cast performed brilliantly. Many congratulations to all the boys and to the talented directorial team of Mrs Hardwick and Miss Ferguson, with splendid support from Miss Lowe, Mrs Newbery, Miss Allen and the backstage team.

Jubilee Celebrations
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in style on 1st June. The boys wore great costumes, their art work in the entrance hall was wonderful and we shared a delightful picnic whilst being serenaded by the Vocal Ensemble singing “O Taste and See” by R.V.Williams, the anthem sung at the Coronation sixty years ago. An afternoon of House games (all diamond-shaped, of course) concluded a very happy day. We hope you will all treasure your Eaton House commemorative mugs.

U.K. Junior Mathematical Challenge
On the first day of the summer term the boys in Years 7 and 8 took part in this national mathematical competition. Of the 45 boys who sat the papers, an impressive number (25) achieved marks which qualify for gold, silver and bronze certificates. 7 boys reached the gold standard, with 9 qualifying for silver and 9 for bronze awards. Certificates were presented to the boys in Final Assembly and special congratulations go to Oliver Vincent who scored the highest mark of all the EHTM candidates.

Residential Trips
Successful trips have taken place this term for three year groups, with Year 5 heading off to Osmington at the beginning of May in the same week that the Year 6 boys travelled to Normandy. After Common Entrance, the Year 8 boys had the pleasure of spending a week in the Lake District. I thank all staff who helped with these expeditions and the organisers in particular – Mme Lena, Mr Lottering and Mr Waring.

Visiting Speakers
Bertie Portal, the actor, came to school in May to tell the boys about his extraordinary row across the Atlantic with James Cash. He showed us some amazing photos and told us a particularly terrifying tale of having to lie still in the cramped sleeping quarters of the boat for days while a tropical storm raged outside.

Luke Bedford, our tennis coach, also spoke to the boys in May about his grandfather’s experience of competing in the 1948 Olympics in London and winning a gold medal for GB in the 4 x 400 relay team. Let us hope for plenty of similar stories to emerge from the 2012 Olympics!

Sports News
We had almost perfect weather for our annual Sports Day at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park; the sun came out and we were lucky to avoid the rain. There was plenty of honest endeavour from all our competitors and some school records tumbled. I offer particular congratulations to Charlie Broad, the Senior Victor Ludorum, and Jude Russell, our Junior Victor Ludorum, and thank Mr Russell and my colleagues for organising the day so efficiently. Our new school record holders are Charlie Broad in the senior high jump (1.63 metres), Oliver Fox in the senior 800 metres (2minutes 33 seconds) and Jude Russell in the Year 5 100 metres (14.66 seconds).

Although the weather has been appalling this summer, some cricket matches have managed to go ahead and the 1st XI has enjoyed memorable victories over Thomas’s Battersea and Northcote Lodge. Our under-12 XI also scored a handsome victory over Sussex House, with Jack Hunter-Lees scoring a tremendous unbeaten century.

There were plenty of other victories to enjoy… the under-9s defeated Ibstock Place, with Leo Farzad taking a hat-trick wicket maiden, the under-10s defeated Sussex House and The Hall, and the under-11s beat The Hall and Hornsby House, with Kulraj Soor scoring 41 runs in the Hornsby game.

Poetry Competition
An excellent Poetry Competition was organised by Ms Lively this term and all the finalists rose to the occasion superbly. I congratulate the following boys on winning their different sections, either by reciting famous poems or their own work: Damian Flore (Year 4), Max Haigh (Year 5), Sebastian Galica (Year 6), Nicolas Gardner (Year 7) and Casper Woods (Year 8).

Summer Concert
A fantastic summer concert took place this week, with scores of performers of all ages and abilities providing the entertainment. It was wonderful to hear James Tamlyn performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for two ‘cellos in G minor with Mrs Newbery and there were many other highlights. Charlie Broad’s rich voice suited “Cry Me a River” quite beautifully, the Vocal Ensemble excelled in their rendition of “Vois sur ton Chemin” by Barratier and there was a wonderful finale with eighty boys on stage singing a medley from “Les Miserables”. Thanks, as ever, go to Mrs Newbery, Mr Freer and all the music staff for their splendid work this year.

Music Recital : Meng Yang Pan
This week many of the boys had the opportunity to hear a performance of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” by the acclaimed young pianist, Meng Yang Pan, in our theatre. We were astounded by the delicacy and strength of her playing. It was a real treat.

Summer Photography Competition
I hope you have all received a letter from Miss Allen about our summer photography competition and that the boys will snap away during their holidays. I look forward to seeing their photographs (on the theme of water) in September.

Year 8 Leavers
At the Year Eight Leavers’ Party last week I paid tribute to the excellent contributions the boys have made in every area of school life. It is an outstanding year group and we hope that they will all be happy and successful in their new schools. The boys provided some wonderful entertainment for staff and parents during the evening and it was a most enjoyable occasion.

Mrs Laura Williams
We say goodbye to Mrs Williams today. She has been head of the geography department for the last 7 years and is an utterly dedicated colleague. Everything she does is carefully planned and the annual field trips to Flatford Mill for the Year 7 boys have always been hugely successful. Geography results at Common Entrance are always strong at EHTM and this year they have been quite exceptional. She leaves the department in excellent shape, but is taking a break from teaching to look after her two young children. We thank her for all that she has done for the school and hope that she will come back and visit us very soon.

New Staff for September
Miss Aideen Seymour tales over as Head of Geography and becomes 7AS form tutor.
Miss Louise Mackie is the new Year 4 class teacher (4LM).
Mr Alex Woods, an old boy of EHTM (and a former Head Boy), will be an additional Gap Student for the Autumn Term.

Welcome Evenings in September
Please make a note of the dates of the September welcome evenings when I will say a few words about the year ahead and you will have an opportunity to meet your son’s new form teacher over a glass of wine. All the meetings begin at 5.45pm.

Tuesday 11th : Year 8
Wednesday 12th : Year 4
Monday 17th : Year 6
Tuesday 18th : Year 5
Wednesday 19th : Year 7

I hope you have a wonderful summer holiday and I look forward to seeing you again on Thursday 6th September.

Best wishes,
Jeremy Edwards

Dear Parents,

We held one parents’ evening last night for Years 4 and 6 and there will be another on Tuesday 3rd July for Years 5 and 7.  Further details will be sent home next week.

Wednesday 4th July : Sports Day
Sports Day will take place at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park on Wednesday 4th July and I hope you will all be able to come along to lend your support.  Events start at 2.00pm this year and I would be grateful if your son could spend the morning at home on 4th July and arrive at the Millennium Arena between 1.15pm and 1.30pm in white PE kit, plus his blazer.  Thank you for your co-operation over this.

Thursday 5th July : Year 8 leavers’ Party
I hope the Year 8 boys have a splendid time in the Lake District next week and my colleagues and I look forward to seeing you and the boys at the Year 8 Leavers’ party on Thursday 5th July, with everything getting underway at 6.30pm.

Tuesday 10th July : Summer Concert
I hope you have the date of the summer concert in your diaries.  Boys from all year groups will be performing, with individual performances interspersed with pieces from the orchestra, string quartet, chamber choir, vocal ensemble and choir.  The concert starts at 6.00 pm in the theatre and you are warmly invited to attend.

With best wishes,
Jeremy Edwards

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Headmaster’s Letter

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

Dear Parents,

Staff News
I am afraid we will have to say goodbye to Mrs Laura Williams in July; after seven years on the staff of EHTM, she will be taking a break from teaching to look after her two young children and possibly move out of London.  She has been an excellent, dedicated  colleague and we thank Mrs Williams for all the splendid work she has done in the geography department here and wish her every happiness in all her future ventures.

We have appointed Miss Aideen Seymour to be our new Head of Geography for September and she will also be a Year 7 form tutor.  Miss Seymour graduated from University College, Cork in 2002 with a joint honours degree in Geography and History.  She completed her Higher Diploma in Education in 2005 and has been teaching abroad (in Oman) and in the UK since then. For the last two years she has been teaching at Latymer Prep School in Hammersmith.

With our new Year 4 intake expanding to three classes in September, Miss Louise Mackie joins us as a Year 4 class teacher.  Miss Mackie graduated from Nottingham University in 2009 with an honours degree in Classical Civilisation and has been teaching this year at Horsmonden Primary School whilst completing her Graduate Teacher Training Programme.

Quiz Night : Friday 25th May
Our charity Quiz Night takes place next week and Mr Jeans has been busy researching lots of challenging questions for staff and parents to puzzle over.  Whether your area of expertise is politics, history, the tube stations of London or dodgy 80s pop bands, this is the quiz for you!  We still have space for more parents to attend and we would love to see you here next Friday.  If you want to book a table of eight or wish to come along on your own, please contact Jane Doxford, my PA, as soon as possible.  We are keen to finalise numbers by Tuesday 22nd May.

The doors open at 6.45pm, the quiz begins at 7.00pm and we will supply table cloths, cutlery and wine glasses.  There will be an auction on the night to raise funds for Trinity Hospice and, if you are able to donate a prize, please get in touch with Mr Lennox-Hilton or Jane Doxford as soon as possible.

For those who have already signed up, a few words about what you need to bring :
(a)  A picnic supper (to be consumed at around 8.30 when Mr Jeans takes a break from asking questions)
(b)  Liquid refreshments (although drinks will be available on the night).

Diamond Jubilee Celebration : Friday 1st June
On Friday 1st June, we will be holding our very own celebration for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  We will be asking the boys to dress up in clothes appropriate to a particular decade of the Queen’s 60-year reign.  The Year 4 boys will be dressing in clothes from the 50s, Year 5 – the 60s, Year 6 – the 70s, Year 7 – the 80s and Year 8 – the 90s.  We would, of course, like to see as much red, white and blue as possible!

After a special picnic at lunchtime there will be some Diamond Jubilee-inspired games on the Common and school will finish slightly early at 3.00pm. Please arrange to collect your son at 3.00pm.  There will be no after-school clubs on 1st June and the school buses will leave at 3.05 pm.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Eaton House The Manor Preparatory Headmaster’s Letter

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Dear Parents,

It has been an action-packed start to the year and the boys have been very busy over the last five weeks.

Eton College Music Award
I am delighted to report that James Tamlyn, Head Boy, has been awarded a 13+ Music Exhibition by Eton College after completing a demanding audition in front of a panel of musical experts – an experience that James likened to appearing in front of the X-Factor judges!  Many congratulations to James and we look forward to hearing more of his ‘cello playing before he leaves us in July.  However, we offer commiserations to Joseph Pryor who just missed out on an award, but whose superb trumpet playing was singled out for special praise by the Eton music department.

Satips Challenge (General Knowledge Quiz)
As preparation for the Satips Challenge, the Prep Schools’ General Knowledge Quiz competition, we had the whole school sitting a general knowledge test in the middle of January.  The top ten performers in Years 4, 5 and 6 were invited to make up the Junior Team and the top performers in Years 7 and 8 were invited to join the Senior Team.  The twenty boys sat the Challenge on 2nd February and we should hear how the boys got on at the end of term.

Public Speaking Competition
I was entertained and enthralled by the range and power of the boys’ performances in the finals of the Public Speaking Competition last week.  In this Olympic year, every boy had been asked to learn an inspiring speech related to the theme of sport and the finalists rose to the occasion brilliantly.  The joint winners of the Year 8 section, Milo Osborne-Young and James Maidment, gave two very contrasting speeches and both were brilliant in their own ways.  James delivered an erudite speech written by himself full of thought-provoking images, whereas Milo chose to recite that hilarious speech by Boris Johnson about the countdown to the 2012 Olympics.  There were many excellent performances to savour from boys of all ages and the following were selected as winners of their respective year groups :

Year 4 : Otto Jonas
Year 5 : Max Haigh & Cameron Piedra
Year 6 : Benedict Griffin
Year 7 : Oliver Fox
Year 8 : James Maidment & Milo Osborne-Young

We offer congratulations to the winners, of course, and every pupil who spent hours choosing a suitable piece and preparing for his performance.  The boys have been given tremendous support from their English teachers and parents and I particularly wish to thank Ms Lively for co-ordinating everything so efficiently.

House Bake Off Competition
A splendid new competition was proposed this term by our resident Master Chef, Mr Rixham, and the boys had great fun testing out their culinary skills.  In the Grand Final, Arundel’s team of chefs (led by Charlie Davies) saw off the significant challenge of Balmoral (led by Daniel Halstead) with the final scores being 98 – 95.  I can personally confirm that all the muffins produced by the boys were very tasty indeed!  Many thanks to Mr Rixham and our judges, Mr Clayton Snr and Mr Clayton Jnr.

Sports News
The weather has not been ideal for sporting events over the last few weeks, but there have been some great performances from our boys in the first half of term.  Highlights include our 1st XV rugby players’ emphatic 31-5 victory over St Philip’s and our under-10 “A” team hockey players’ narrow 3-2 victory over Newton Prep.  On a freezing day in late January, Oliver Fox competed in the London Schools’ Cross-Country race on Parliament Hills in Hampstead and finished in 6th place even though he was up against older boys – a hugely impressive performance.

Year 7 Residential Trip : 27th February – 2nd March
The Year 7 boys are heading off to Flatford Mill on Monday 27th February, returning on Friday 2nd March, with Mrs Williams, Miss Allen and Mr Jeans.  I am sure they will learn a great deal from the trip, as well as having the opportunity to complete their research for their Common Entrance geography coursework.

World Book Day : 1st March
On Thursday 1st March we will be celebrating World Book Day and I hope your sons will come to school dressed up as a character from a favourite book.

Cross-Country Races : 13th and 14th March
All boys will compete in the school cross-country races on Tuesday 13th March (for Years 4 & 5) and Wednesday 14th March (for Years 6 – 8 ) at 2.30 pm.  Please come along to support and feel free to jog the last half mile with them, if you are so inclined!

Year 8 Parents’ Evening : 19th March
I hope Year 8 parents have noted from the school calendar that there will be a Parents’ Evening on Monday 19th March and we will be able to update you on your son’s progress this term ahead of the Common Entrance “mocks” in late April.  Further details will be sent home after half-term.

Senior Play (”Macbeth”) : 22nd March
The senior boys from Years 7 and 8 will be performing an abridged version of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” at 6.30 pm on Thursday 22nd March and I hope you will come along to support.  Pupils, parents and family members are all most welcome.

House Music Competition : 27th March
The House Singing competition takes place this afternoon, but the House Singing is just part of the wider House Music Competition and we shall hear individual singers, instrumentalists and bands in the second part of the competition at 6.00 pm on Tuesday 27th March, which I hope you will be able to attend.

I look forward to seeing you again at 8.30 am on Monday 20th February.  Whether you are on the slopes, on the beach or staying at home, I wish you all an enjoyable half-term break.

Yours sincerely,
Jeremy Edwards

Eaton House The Manor Girls’ Welcome Letter

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Dear Parents

A very warm welcome back to the Summer Term – I do hope you all had a very enjoyable Easter.

Staff News
I am delighted to report that Miss Helena had a baby boy, LJ, born on 15/3/11 weighing 3.2 kg! Mother and baby are doing well and will be in for a visit very soon.

We welcome Miss Georgie into KG2 this term as their Assistant Teacher. Miss Georgie joins us from Eaton House Belgravia and I have no doubt she will quickly feel part of the team here.

Letters
This term we will be sending all correspondence in both paper form and as emails. Should the system be successful we will consider moving over to a fully paper-free system from September.

Please could you let Jane Doxford know if you do not receive the emails, or if you need to update your email details on jdoxford@eatonhouseschools.com.

Extras
Currently all extras are paid for by cheque but for this term the Girls’ School will trial a system whereby these costs are added to your school bill. Letters regarding trips will come home as normal to request permission and these will detail the cost which will be added to the bill.

Uniform
May I remind you that all girls should be in Summer Uniform from today – school dress, white ankle socks, jumper if needed, blazer and summer hat. The girls may remain in Summer Uniform until the end of September.

Timetable
We have a few changes to this term’s timetable. Mr Luke Bedford will be taking Forms 2, 3 and 4 for Tennis on Mondays and there will be Play Rehearsals for the Senior girls instead of Drama and General Studies. A copy of your daughter’s timetable will be sent home today.

Should you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch.

With best wishes

Mrs Sarah Segrave
Headmistress

Eaton House The Vale Welcome Letter

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Dear Parents

Welcome back to the Summer Term 2011. I hope you had a wonderful holiday with the children and that you didn’t get too sunburnt if you stayed in the U.K.!

Many of you will have noticed the redecoration of the front hallway – it looks so good it almost seems a shame to put things on the walls, but fear not…we will be putting up notice-boards and a few other things during the course of the next few weeks. We have also had the ground floor childrens’ loos redone; it is now so much more child-friendly and many of the pupils are excited about the colourful scheme in there!

I would be interested to know how many parents would prefer ‘letters home’ in the form of emails instead. Please fill in the attached form and return it to me!

There are a few dates to save this term:

Parents’ evenings will be Tuesday 28th June and/or Thursday 30th June
Sports Day is on the morning of Tuesday 5th July
End of term: 12 noon on Thursday 14th July

As ever, we all look forward to a super Summer Term! Here’s hoping that the weather last week wasn’t a flash in the pan…

With very best wishes

Mr R. Greenwood
Headmaster
