Meet the Head

The Head of Eaton House Belgravia.

Mr Huw May, MEd, NPQH, Advanced Diploma Royal Welsh College of Music, BMus, is continuing in the strong academic tradition of Eaton House Belgravia, tailoring both the Pre-Preparatory and Preparatory teaching specifically to the learning styles of boys.

An experienced headmaster, Mr May has taken on six headships in total, including head of girls at Sydenham High, head of Roedean Junior School, head of St Mary's Hall Junior School and head of Eaton House The Manor Pre-Prep School.

In 2018, under Mr May's committed headship, the boys achieved outstanding results, with 40% of 7+ and 8+ entrants achieving offers to Westminster Under or St Paul’s, amongst other fine schools.

We are non-selective at entry, but Mr May has introduced a personalised learning plan to ensure that every boy is stretched and supported as necessary in the run-up to examinations. He feels that every boy has a talent and it is the school's job to ensure that he feels confident in all areas as he faces the 7+ and 8+ examinations. To that end, learning enrichment is available to those pupils who need it and may even be appropriate for potential scholars in areas of weakness.

A passionate believer in immersive learning and fluid rather than crystalline intelligence, Mr May wants the boys to achieve a higher state of learning through agile thought and advanced problem solving. This, he believes, is the key to the leadership of the future.

Lessons suited to boys

It is essential to Mr May that no boy should feel overlooked at Eaton House Belgravia and the Good Schools Guide has commented that he has a strong vision for the school. He strives to make learning fun. The school buzzes with activity and lessons are energetic and perfectly suited to boys. With sport, music, drama and extracurricular activities, he plans a busy, happy day for the boys, with many after-school clubs to choose from.

Because Mr May believes that boys blossom academically at different rates, he was delighted to open a new Preparatory School on site in September 2018. This gives parents ultimate flexibility on whether boys choose to take the 7+, 8+ or 11+ examinations.

Most boys will choose to leave at 7+ and 8+, as they always have done, but individualised learning plans inform parents on the examination that is going to offer the best chance of entry for their son into the top schools. In the run-up to exams, boys are assessed weekly, with written feedback for parents every two weeks. The boys are fully supported with outstanding pastoral care throughout the whole process of exams.

Mr May is as ambitious for the new Prep as he is for the Pre-Prep. He aims for it to be simply the best and, in the early years, he plans to ensure that small class sizes will mean unparalleled individual attention for the founder boys.

"We need all Eaton House Belgravia boys to discover a love of learning early. We will achieve this by igniting the spark of their interest and prompting them to think about what they are learning in a wider context."
