Stay Safe Online

Posted: 10th February 2025

This year, Safer Internet Day begins on Tuesday 11th February. Every year it encourages us to think about how we use the internet and how to protect ourselves online. With easy and constant access to social media, gaming, and online learning, it’s easy to forget the risks that come with being connected. But just like in the real world, there are dangers online. Safer Internet Day is a reminder to be smart, kind, and careful when using the internet. With the emergence of AI, it is important to inform our students at Eaton House Schools all the dos and don’ts when it comes to using AI tools.

Why Is Internet Safety Important?

The internet is fun and helpful, but it can also be risky. Cyberbullying, scams, and oversharing personal information can lead to many problems. Even small mistakes – like accepting a friend request from someone you don’t really know – can have serious repercussions. With the uncertainties of AI and modern technology, there is always something new for our students to learn about and implement in their daily lives both in school and at home. At Eaton House Schools, we believe it is our responsibility to ensure all students are kept safe both in the real and digital world.

How Can You Stay Safe?

1. Think Before You Share – never post personal details like your full name, school, home address, or phone number. Even things like your school uniform in a photo can give away more than you think. Especially when using AI tools, like ChatGPT, ensure names and personal details haven’t been mentioned.

2. Be Kind and Stop Cyberbullying if you see someone being mean online, don’t join in. Report hurtful messages and support friends who may be struggling. Remember – words can hurt, even on a screen.

3. Check Your Privacy Settings – many websites and apps allow you to control who views your posts and accounts. Make sure your accounts are private so only friends can see what you share, and that way you can avoid any unknown people reaching out.

4. Don’t Talk To Strangers Online – not everyone online is who they say they are. If someone you don’t know reaches out to you, don’t reply. Tell a trusted adult if something feels wrong.

5. Think Before You Click – strange links or messages that seem ‘too good to be true’ are often scams. If you are unsure, always ask an adult. When using trending artificial intelligence platforms, always ensure that you do not include any personal details about yourself, peers, family members as it is still unknown how information is processed through AI tools.

At Eaton House The Manor, our students will attend an informative assembly illustrating the importance of Safer Internet Day. This assembly will help our pupils understand just how and when to tackle the dangers and risks of the digital world.

Final Thought

The internet should be a safe and happy place for everyone. This Safer Internet Day, take a moment to think: what’s one thing you can do to stay safe and help others online?
